Hey guys and gals, I am lookinging at buying my first 1911 and I know there are a lot of different brand names and I wanted a few opinions on what 1911s have a good name and are reliable. I know this is a broad question but feel free to share your experience and knowledge.

my first 1911 (and still only one so far) was a sti trojan 6" 45
so far i'm happy with it but only have a m&p 9 to compare it to (no comparison)
the 9 is now my wife's

I know im going to be spending at least 1500 probally 2000 max. I'm going to be shooting this every week and want to get something that will last.

Don't get a 1911 in 9mm, it's just wrong. I'm thinking of getting the Remington r1 government.

That's exactly what I was thinking!
I really wanted a 1911 for my first centre Fire pistol. But I kind of wanted to start 9mm... I found the wilson combat/beretta brigadier 92s, that's how you roll in 9mm ( insert cool smiley face with glasses here)
I'm still on the hunt for my 1911,
Buy ounce, cry once.
Hope you post pics of your decision!
Cheers

In that price range my advice is a Dan Wesson. I would recommend for a first 1911 get a full length version with adjustable sights.

Looking for a modern look. Not sure about features going to the store this weekend to check a few out.

OP,
Name a few features you want or don't want in a 1911 so we can narrow down the choices. Full length guide rod? Internal/ external extractor? Old school or modern?

Sti Trojan is nice

Think about getting something with target sights, unless you plan to be running and gunning at short distances. For myself there are much fewer 1911s to choose from going ahead because I refuse to even look at ones without LPA sights.

In that range, I would suggest STI Trojan or Lawman. STI's fit and finish and small parts quality is superior to the likes of Kimber, Colt, Springfield, S&W, etc. IMO. It's the cheapest more or less "premium" 1911 out there. Another option would be to add a couple hundred bucks and go for a lower end Les Baer.
