.308, .30-06, .270, .284, .338, .30-30, .32 win, .35 whelan, the list goes on and on. Pick a gun that fits your body, use good bullets, practice practice practice at different ranges from different shooting positions, and you will do fine. Try running around a bit before you actually shoot at the range, just to make yourself a little out of breath, then try shooting, this will simulate hand carrying through the woods and coming across an animal.

I really like the .260 Rem, 6.5x55, 7mm-08 and 7x57. They are all really good for a first time hunter.

.30-06 in a bolt gun. Savage, Stevens, Ruger, Weatherby, Remington, and Winchester. Find one that fits your budget and style (i.e. comes up to the shoulder well and like the looks of it.) For the scope a 2x7 or 3x9 in what you can afford.

What do you like in Rifles? Bolt action, Lever action. Semi auto?

Then you can get some replys to help you narrow down your search.

p/s all the 30-06 advice is good. Someday I will have one myself.

30-06 is as common as.........

You can kill everything on North America with a 30-06.....

Get a 30-06.....

Joel, what areas do you plan on hunting and how high is your budget? Also do you want to use iron sights or a scope? Your best, all around bet would be either a .270, .308 or .30-06 simply because you can get any of them in any style of rifle you prefer. Your in the military, therefore you may prefer an autoloader. Or if you like a bolt action, that's easy. Even Browning will build you a lever action. Go to the best stocked gunshop around, try on as many makes and styles as you can and find the rifle that feels best to you. Good luck.

I don't think there is any other round with as many possible bullet weights to choose from than 30-06. There are other good ones out there too like .270 and .308 which work just fine too, but I 30-06 is the perfect place to start for so many reasons.

I would go for a 30-06 ( actually, I did ! ). Other calibres to consider are a 270 or 308. All are a bit toooo much for smaller deer and not really ideal for moose but can, with the right cartridge, be made to work. I think most flexibility can be obtained with the 30-06 ( especially if you get into handloading).

Enjoy.

Did anyone mention 30-06 yet?:p:p Although I am partial to a lot of different calibres - 6.5x55, 7x57, 8x57, 7.62x54R, 7.63x53Arg., 32 Win, 30-30, .303 Br, and so on, I would pick the 30-06 if forced to live with one calibre. Can be loaded up, down, and crossways. Good selection of factory ammo almost anywhere. Yep, good choice!!:p:p

My favorite hunting round is the good old 30-06.

Ammo is available in every back-water gas station in the country, and there is ammo made to whack everything. Every type of game in North America has been hunted with 30-06 for over a hundred years.
