Buying restricted without belonging to club

Hey there, I was just wondering something. I just got off the phone with canada-ammo asking if it was possible to order a handgun (glock 17 in particular) without yet belonging to a club. I was told that the CFO will not authorize a transfer unless you already belong to a club. I thought I read somewhere on this forum that it was ok not to belong as long as you stated which club you intended to join. The only reason I'm not joining now is because it's the end of the year and I dont want to pay for the whole year for 2 months. If anyone knows if it is in fact legal to buy with out joining weither through a distributor or privately it'd be appreciated. Thanks

any private or public sale of a firearm still has to be transferred through the CFO, who will always ask for your home club. Its always been this way since I got into shooting.
I understand the predicament, the only option I could think of would be to have a member at the club buy it for you in his name, and just meet at the club to shoot it whenever time works out for you two..then when the new year comes, join and transfer the firearm

i did something similar before i had my PAL or RPAL, i had a friend buy a G22 for me (i made the EMT, but it was all under his licence) and whenever I wanted to take it out, I just went with him, and he hung onto it until I was licenced. it sucks, but these are the laws we're trying to change!

It depends on where you are.
Restricted transfers have to be approved by your CFO.
In general terms there are two common reasons that you could use to justify the purchase of a handgun: target shooting and to form part of a collection.
You might be just as far ahead to call your CFO and find out what your options are.
Really, you should join a club. As suggested, find out if they will pro-rate your membership.

I just picked up an AR-15 without being and member of a club in Ontario or Canada for that matter and had no problems with the transfer. I do have a handgun and a 12(5) already but that doesn't mean much to the CFO, or does it?

I managed to tell the CFO I was in the process of joining a club and was waiting for my safety course...

Transfer went through no problem (Ontario)

From experience a first time restricted transfer will not take place unless you are a member of a club, I had to join and send proof of membership before the transfer was approved/completed.

Not true. I got my Browning HP about 4 months back, I am just applying to a club.

To OP, tell the CFO that you intend to join club X.

A girl at the CFO office for Sask. told me last week I didn't need to belong to a club to get an ATT and register the firearm. Odd as they made a major deal out of it when i purchased my first restricted. Perhaps its only the first check?

If you don't belong to a club it is difficult to say a restricted/prohibited firearm is for target practice. Since those are the only legal places to discharge them.

Can you discharge a restricted firearm if you are en route to a club? Possibly.

The CFO wants a stated fact, of why you intend to purchase the firearm in question. Transportation is a whole other can of worms.

Same here. The store (P&D in Edmonton) did it for me. Within the hour I had my transfer, STATT and LTATT complete and was going home with my new handgun.

I am in the process of joining a club. I have to wait for the safety course which is 7 months from now (the earliest available date). Will it be a problem if I want to purchase a handgun before I take the safety course?

Some stores will sell you the gun before you have your restricted, they just won't release it to you until you have your card ,number, transfer and STATT all in place.

oh no. I already have my PAL-R. The safety course is an in-house course as a requirement to join the club.

We are happy to sell it to you and forward all the data to the CFO, you can then contact them and discuss it. They always ask what club you are a member of, so we ask our customers.

They would NOT complete MY transfer until sent them PROOF I was in a gun club. I said "I am joining one, etc etc" but they wouldn't complete it until I sent in proof.

I have had a RPAL/restricted FAC for 10 years prior to owning a restricted firearm.

:DAlso, if you are a prospector or geologist, etc, & have an ATC to carry while engaged in your lawful occupation or are recognized as a collector by the CFO, or are one of the handful of people in Canada who has an ATC "to protect life".
