FYI and as I write this,
Some Canadian CIVPOLs are outside the wire working with US army MPs and ANPs and are exposed to any kind of danger while on patrol in Kandahar PSS areas (and other areas). CIVPOLs are as exposed to danger as some military jobs are.
I have a few partners from my dept. who did that for their whole 9 months deployment. One even got decorated by the US army for bravery.
If getting Gucci stuff like Winz says seems to be good for the range and the regular armchair commandos we occasionally encounter. I guess it will probably be good for a CIVPOL in A'stan.

Off topic question, is there any type of special or additional training given to police officers heading over? Something specific to armed combat, for example?

Not sure what other countries do for their similar roles but civie police will participate in say the Maple Guardian serials. Their job is specific to mentoring the ANP in police work. They carry wpns for the purpose of self-defence but would not normally participate in say a form of an organised defensive, advance to contact, etc.
We have a 6-8 weeks of training with the CF prior to the deployment. But you have to keep in mind that, as far as my dept is concerned, they tend to choose members that have some kind of military/swat/ firearms instructors experience. If you've been in the community relation squad for the past 5 years, we'll you might have to forget A'stan. They'll propose you something like Haiti.
As far as being directly involved in combat, obviously it is not our task. Also, bear in mind that the ANP is also used to fight the Talibans as a light infantery unit. Their kill ratio is something like 27/1 if you compare with the ANA. They have less equipment and less training. ANP is the last job on earth you wanna take!
Don't forget to keep in mind that sometimes, even if you're not running after troubles outside the wire, well, it comes running after you... Some guys I know were in a PSS (police sub-station) for the night and they got called because a SF unit was falling into an ambush while doing a night raid on a weapon cache. So because you obviously can't stay alone in the PSS (MP and ANP are going to respond to the help call), you have to go, no matter what you job description tells you.... Some of us even like the idea of going a bit after trouble...

I also bought an ACOG and a KAC quadrail to put on the C7...Almost bought a S&B short dot, but I couldn't find a decent mount that would fit the damn upper with a weaver rail..... I also replaced the CF tac vest....

Now if only the military would see fit to issue useful stuff like that. The issue tac vest is a POS. yay gunfight and I have a whopping 5 mags (including the one in the rifle)

You can get a set of Leupold rings that will work on the upper.

Just to clear a few things up.
First off, I just got back from 3-09 recently, and was with the OMLT. I can tell you with 100% certainty that no CIVPOL was attached to the POMLT. POMLT is Infantry and MP's, that's it that's all.
Secondly and to confirm what was posted above, Leupold 30mm rings will work, unaltered, on a CF issued upper. I carried a NF NXS 1-4x on a set of super high Mark4 rings, and at the unmagnified setting the reticle cleared the front sight post perfectly.
Leg, just to be clear. I am in no way suggesting that LEOs employed in a manner of being part of the POMLT have a 'jammy go.' As I said, they must defend themselves and therefore carry a rifle. I am merely saying that a Magpul CTR is a pretty gucci piece of kit.
Greg, you might have seen Leg there during the changeover from 3-09 to 1-10, Leg is with the BG.
There are some RCMP and such but they aren't there for the purpose of getting into a gunfight...even if it may happen.
