I recently acquired a decent condition C96, however I noticed that there appear to be file/grind marks underneath the rear sight. I've been trying to see if there is any info online and so far have not been able to find anything not related to the numbers associated with the rear sights. Any idea why this would have been done?

You have mixed parts C96, refinished also. Original reason behind numbered parts is that they were matched and handfitted to the gun. In this case I can only guess person who put rear sight was trying to lower it down to sight in by filing the base.

OK I got confused for a minute. GB post is about different C96, also with second number on rear sight. Explanation could be simple - you seem to be attracting C96 with seconds numbers...

"Not refinished" by the way, also advertised as numbers matching but the serialised number on the bolt stop was ground down before being reblued with the numbers still visible enough to see they don't match the rest of the gun.

You may not like the answer, but it sounds like that gun is a put together at worst or at best has a few replacement parts & needed fitting. Too bad it was done by an ape?...

Hard to tell what your into with finish from those pics. But if it's too nice, it's probably a refinish. Sorry to be a downer on your purchase & this is just my 2 cent opinion.

filed to remove SS markings, well I am sure the markings are on all parts, my PPKs are this way, look at other parts and see if its marked or filed, sucks to find something like this and s seller than has to find another buyer to get you a refund

if this is the best of the guns he has what are the others like?

You're looking for some historical reason why bubba took a file to your gun? Lol

I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I don't even mind it being refinished, but it was described as numbers matching (which it is not) and with no mention of the giant grinding mark on it.

He took his listing down for the other 4 or so he was selling, and there are no egregious file marks like that on the rest of the gun aside from on the other refinished parts which have actually been reblued.

For example, the bolt stop which has what looks like a 0 or 6, 7, illegible, and a 3. 4 digit serial number stamped on it.

Yikes, seems the seller is trying to blame me now.

I must say the vast majority of deals I've made over the years have been great, but there has been a few where people claim not to have noticed fairly obvious things and then when confronted get aggressive about it. People do miss things from time to time, but how they react when confronted by the bad news says a lot.

There is no excuse for someone buying and re- selling multiple C 96's not to notice filled down numbers, filled raw metal under the sight and mismatching numbers when the claim matching.

Fraud plain and simple if everything is as presented.

you need to post lots more complete photos, back of the action, slide stop area, markings, etc.

Sure thing,

It looks like the grips are stamped 931 on the inside, Jesus at this point I wonder what I'll find if I do a full take down of it.

have you reviewed the pictures he sent with the firearm? reason I say this some years ago I purchased a rifle, the pictures were great but the actual rifle was not as pictured, after looking closely my guess was the pictures were several years old, it likely looked that way when pictured but not at time of purchase.

the seller did agree to refund the price which I took gladly

That’s too bad... so what would be the difference, between a rebuilt one and an all matching( price wise...I mean)...and no it’s NOT all matching. In my house...everyone would be losing sleep....matching is matching...not sore off matching.. wish you the best in resolving your purchase.

Is that part under the sight with grind marks separate from barrel assembly or is it that same piece of metal as the barrel and upper receiver?
