Cabelas is a kick ass store...

imagine that, retail stores hiring young people who may or may not be firearms enthusiasts. Now that DOES NOT excuse poor firearms handling, but its naive to think that they will only hire gun owners to work at a big box store. For one, they likely pay minimum wage or slightly above it. Do you want to go and make minimum wage? I doubt it.

Obviously....but my intention was to demonstrate that they apparently hire staff off the street, the people working the gun counter at every Cabelas or Bass Pro Shop I've ever been in haven't been gun nutz, they're just normal retail staff without specific knowledge or training in guns other than how to sell them.

thats why its worth it to spend 50 bucks more and buy from a firearms store owned run and staffed by real shooters IMO. That being said sometimes you get better service from these chains , and if the prices aren't even close then its a big box store for me

i was there and was not as impressed as i thought i would be. the staff is not very good, i ask to see a scout scope and they said they didn't have one in. so i was like ok and looked around the scope section and found the scout scope i was looking for. one of the guys didn't even know what a scout scope was and was trying to get my to buy a regular one?! went to was and the staff was much better.

Do you like that K4?

With the possible exception of firearms and fudge, I think WSS may actually have better selection for certain things - but I think it entirely depends on what you're looking for. WSS certainly seems to have more retail space than Cabelas (although the displays and fudge counter are nice touches). Staff are certainly friendlier and more helpful at Cabelas. And you can order anything from the Cabelas catalog and have it delivered to the store no charge.

As someone else pointed out, maybe this will inspire WSS to become a better retailer. And if not...

Fixed that for you.

Well the best part about cabelas is that it is competition for wss. And was needed I just hope wss keeps there shelfs full it's pretty sad when you walk in there n half the shelfs r empty. All I'm really trying to say is that wss needed a wake up call. It's nice to have competition. Everyone likes a great deal. I will definitely be shopping at both stores

Unfortunately, the causes of that problem aren't just local, so no matter how much the Saskatoon store feels the pressure from Cabela's in Saskatoon, they can't fix it unless the central organisation gets better.

And unfortunately, the problems with the Saskatoon store are partly local, so even if WSS hq pulls its finger out, we may still end up with only one big box gun/outfitting store.

Funny you mention that...I was just in Myrtle Beach, so I hit up the Bass Pro. Buddy at the gun counter was a certified gun nut, and he was CCW...Let me play with some of the would be prohibs, and he knew I was a Canadian and wouldn't be buying anything. Buddy working the fishing section was an offshore fishing guide, and buddy in fly fishing writes articles for Feild and Stream.

Compare that to Vaughn...

I was up there yesterday and enjoyed the shopping. They had everything I needed. Picked up another set of Lone Wolf climbing sticks, some smoke sticks for my bear hunt, a camp knife and some bino's. There bow selection and archery gear was somewhat limited but I buy all my achery gear down in the states anyway.
Maybe the Saskatoon WSS has selection but Regina`s is a complete joke. They still have no .22`s in stock and its almost June!!!

Cheers!!

These ##### sessions about certain stores and dumb people behind the counter, make me ask; which side of the counter is the stupid guy really on?

If you've got a half a clue, and it seems that everybody on this site is an expert, then all you should have to ask is whether an item is in stock. If they've got it and the price is right then buy it, if they don't then just move on down the road.

Hey I've bashed the guys at WSS too, but not any more. Those guys are just trying to do a job, nothing more. Give them a break.

They have some good deals, but I had an issue at Cabelas in Maine where one of the staff members took a Glock out of the display, with a magazine in it, didn't prove it clear, and then pointed it at my 1 yr old son to demonstrate the laser sight attached to it. She had absolutely no clue about firearm safety. I had a lengthy discussion with the store manager about it.

I once had a car salesman demonstrate the ABS system by slamming on the brakes as an old lady in a walker was crossing the street.......true story.
