Cabelas / Wholesale Sports SKS Quality

Hey guys, I recently applied for my PAL and I am planning on purchasing a laminate stock SKS from either cabela's or wholesale sports but am a bit uneasy about it since I can only find them on their online store. I can be described as somewhat picky and I know when it comes to buying online you can't exactly pick one out from a number of different ones like in store. There is only about a 25$ difference between the two stores so whichever has better quality will be getting my money. I'm just wondering if anyone has purchased a laminate stock SKS from either of these stores and the quality of the firearm in respect to the stock, noticeable imperfections, and other things like that. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

For those that are in Edmonton, the Leduc CT has them on for 189.99 hardwood and 199.99 Laminate. Think the "sale" is on till Thursday
 
If you are really picky and prefer a perfect rifle you should wait until you can handpick yours. I went through 40 SKS rifles at Bulls Eye Sports in London and bought two. They were not laminate but you can see the extreme differences in wear and tear on the rifles. They had them organized according to looks and I purchased two of the last three shown to me. You can bet on retailers sending the online buyer what they can't sell in person. Perhaps I am wrong, but my experience tells me to wait and handpick rather than take chances. Twice burned and never again. I have more confidence in fellow CGNers to give me quality product sight unseen! There are plenty of fantastic laminate SKS rifles that come up on the EE! Learn to trust your fellowman.
 
I bought mine a few years ago online, Trade Ex. I was happy with my purchase, but hey we're talking under 200 bucks. You can drop that much money on a night out.
 
I really wish that the stores around here that carry the SKS didn't have such a limited inventory, even with the hardwood ones. This is my first time purchasing a gun so I was a bit unsure about purchasing one off a forum but it might be what i do if I am unable to find a decent SKS in the city. A bit of a side note but are there any restrictions against purchasing firearms in another province then bringing them back to your own?

This if they've still got them on the shelves. Cabelas seem pretty overpriced right now, the one's I've seen don't look much better than what you can find elsewhere if you're willing to dig through the pile. Wholesale will let you go through a few there if it's not busy too, and their price isn't too terrible.... I think they were even on sale a week or two ago...

Biggest rule is be picky about what you're getting, dig around, it's your money...

^^This, its nice to be able to dig a bit, and even have them show you a few at wholesale, as long as you don't mind getting a dirty look! I've never bought from westrifle, but I know Corwin has great stuff, Martin isn't afraid to contact you to help you get what you want.
 
The one thing about Wholesale Sports in Calgary is that they will let you be a bit choosy, especially if you catch the guys at the counter on a slow day.

A lot of it will depend on who's behind the counter at any of these big box places. You get the right guy, in the right frame of mind, chat 'em up a bit, and you can do pretty good.

Other than that, your 3 best bets are Corwin-Arms, Westrifle, or Weimajack (on the EE) - all three have great reps for doing the hand-selecting before they even put them into inventory, so you're pretty sure about getting a great rifle just by clicking "add to cart".

It might cost an extra couple of $$, but the difference is pretty minor for a lot of peace of mind. My "go to" for Red Rifles is Corwin-Arms - Martin is a stand up guy and great to deal with. You'll here a lot of similar comments around here about the other two I mentioned above.

Ya, thats a nice looking gun.............and free shipping! Apparently Marstar also has nice laminates in, although I cant recall the details regarding shipping, but you get a free hard case. Plus like the OP said, there are a bunch of great retailers/sellers on here.

Ya pays yur money and ya takes yur chance my son. Unless U can inspect and hold the weapon in yur hand. Even then ya have to know what yur looken at. Most all of em have been issued and carried by the troops. Some of em have been reconditioned in the armory before being sold. Some of em are brand new in cosmoline. Yur question can not be answered.
 
I bought mine at Wholesale an it is numbers matching a new in appearance. What does a guy expect for $200? 20 rounds of 338 Lapua Mag ammo.
 
Purchased a '53 Izhevsk from Wholesale on St. James in 2013, and I've been quite happy with it. Non-matching, but the stock and bluing were like-new. These days I'd go with CT though. The ones on Leila and Kenaston have had quite a few excellent examples on display as of late, and from what I hear they're swimming in them.
 
Its still pretty amazing that you can get a highly reliable durable non restricted rifle for 200 bucks. Ok accuracy you're in for a 5 to 6 moa rifle but so what, some other 762x39 NR semis are also that accurate and sell for 12times as much.
