The calendar has rolled over to the New Year and that can only mean one thing... the submissions for entries for Cabin Fever Challenge 2024 is now open. For those who haven't seen it or heard of it before, I'll try to provide a quick summary

What is Cabin Fever Challenge?
Cabin Fever Challenge (CFC) is an example of a "Postal Competition" where entrants video themselves and submit their entries virtually. The word competition is used loosely as you are truly competing against yourself to see what you are capable of and it is just for fun

Who can enter? What does it cost?
Anyone who can safely handle and shoot firearms. The competition is run by volunteers and is 100% free to enter. All you need is a way to host a video to send in for submission (free video hosting can be done through YouTube, Rumble, Google Drive, etc)

What type of gun can I use?
There are six different categories to try to make it as accessible to as many people as possible
Division 1 - Vintage Semi-Auto is any type of "as issued" semi-auto designed prior to 1958 (SKS, M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, AG42, etc)
Division 2 - Modern Semi-Auto/Unlimited is everything else that doesn't fall in the vintage category (AR180 platforms, Tavors, T97, KelTec, or any vintage gun not in it's 'as issued' state by way of new stock, rails, pistol grips, etc)
Division 3 - Manually Operated is anything bolt action, pump action, lever action
Division 4 - Single Shots include break action, falling block, rolling block, etc
Division 5 - Muzzleloaders is fairly self-explanatory
Division 6 - 22 Rimfire of any make/model/action

What am I shooting at and at what range?
Division 1-4 shoot at an 8" circle at 100 meters
Division 5 shoots at an 8" circle at 50 meters
Division 6 shoots at a 4" circle at 50 meters
Targets can be downloaded and printed free from h ttps://www.riflechair.com/cabin-fever-challenge

What is the course of fire? How much ammo do I need?
Divisions 1-4 and 6 are all 20 rounds total. In this order the shooter fires 5 rounds from standing (reloads), 5 rounds from kneeling (reloads), 5 rounds from prone (reloads), then 5 rounds from sitting.
Division 5 (muzzleloader) is only 1 round from each position

How does scoring work?
Scoring is done the same for all categories. It is {[Number of hits on target x 5] divided by [Time in seconds]} multiplied by 100

How do I submit my video and score?
There is a link on h ttps://www.riflechair.com/cabin-fever-challenge to submit scores. Or you can e-mail your submission to [cfcdivisions @ gmail . com]

When is the competition open?
CFC runs from January 1st to March 31st each year

I don't know how to video edit, how can I do this?
While some entrants make pretty elaborate videos (CGN's own Murray3d comes to mind as does mustachioed YouTube celebrity BritishMuzzleloaders), all you really need to do is lean your phone on something to record you shooting the course of fire then walking to the target to count hits

Is there a detailed explainer video I can watch while drinking my morning coffee?
Glad you asked! Absolutely. I'll even put it in the thread here so you don't even have to leave GunNutz to watch it!

What if I still have questions?
Post them here and I will do my best to answer them or direct you to where you can get the answers

I encourage everyone to get out and try this competition. It is a great excuse to get to the range and practice some shooting fundamentals at the time of year many of us hibernate

The cold snap is starting to lift in Western Canada and we should be back to decent shooting weather by the weekend... just sayin'

Well, if this video doesn't prove that this competition is only for fun, I don't know what will. While not in the official category of single shot rifles, I believe it may be in the spirit of it. I once heard the rules for single shots described as "rolling blocks, falling blocks, you know, all the blocks" so maybe a magazine block will count

EDIT: As I had expected, obviously the SMLE with a magazine disconnect does not count as a single shot rifle. But it was still a lot of fun to get out there and shoot a new-to-me rifle. Also, it was super cool to have the REAL Othias stop by for the filming of the video :p

Got my second entry (read first official entry) edited together. I believe this run epitomizes the spirit and intent of Cabin Fever Challenge very well; that is improvement of personal marksmanship. This is the third year I have run this same rifle, and each year my score improves. I still have a ways to go, but with more trigger time I'm confident I can beat the score again next year

YearHitsTime (Seconds)Total Score
2022616518.2
2023912236.9
20241112643.6

Another Division (Modern/Unlimited) run and video put together. Didn't do as well as previous years with this rifle, so it is my first (of two: spoiler) decreases in previous years' scores. Even though I scored lower, I can't really complain about extra range time. There is still one month left to get entries in, so get out there!

Two weeks left to enter. And at least here in BC the weather is starting to look a lot like Spring

Most likely my final entry of this CFC season. I'd hoped to get out and try the Rimfire division for the first time, but I messed up my back and I don't think it would be wise to be on light-duty at work and be seen out at the range. We'll see how the healing goes though

This is my 4th year using this same SKS. I didn't improve on last year's score which I'm a little disappointed in, but it is my second best run out of the four years. Seems most of my shots are left of centre, so I wonder is a slight drifting of the sight would improve my score?

You have today and tomorrow to shoot and submit your video for the 2024 Cabin Fever Challenge. Time's running out!

The final awards video is up for Cabin Fever Challenge 2024. Expect more visibility of this competition in years to come as founder and host Riflechair steps back from the hosting role after building it up over the last 10 years and passes the torch to guntuber BlokeOnTheRange

Once again, thanks to the hosts, volunteers, and everyone who entered
