I just got my RPAL.. and although I don't want to purchase much in the form of handguns.. I would like to own a nice 9mm Luger... I am not so concerned about rarity... or arsenal... however would like to get a quality piece.. being completely green on this matter,.. seeking advise and guidance.. and or a starting point in my searching and research... it is something I would like indulge in as well as have in my collection.
 
I'm not a Luger expert, but most Lugers that were issued to the German Army have 4" barrels, and are thus in the prohibited class in Canada. Seeing as how you just got your RPAL, you won't be able to own one of these unless it's a rebarreled to over 4 1/4" bbl length, or you have a relative who DOES have the proper class on thier RPAL and wills it to you when they die.

There are Navy and Artillery Lugers that have longer barrels, and I believe the Swiss Lugers fall into the restricted class. Be prepared to cough up some big dollars if you want one of these.
 
Most lugers are not collector grade which makes them a good candidate to re barrel as a shooter. Epp's has a machine shop that makes barrels for them to do the swap, so expect that to add a few hundred dollars to your cost. Lugers look neat, but are finicky, crappy triggers and they break easily and are hard to get parts for. Yet there has been a mystique about them since the first serviceman brought one back from Germany. I have a collector grade restricted luger that is over 100 yrs old that looks like it came out of the box. I shoot it occasionally (at $60plus /box it's all I can afford) but I look at it a lot and will probably get buried with it

Been collecting these for many years, sure it's an interesting pistol. All previous comments agreed...

Luger Variations as follows:

Military P08 4 in bbl 12-6
Commercial 4 3/4 bbl cal 7.65mm
Navy 6 in bbl, rare & expensive
Artillery 8 in bbl
Carbine...(you wont see that one)

Collector grade P08s usually in the 1K range, Arties in the 2 K range....Another bet is a ``restricted shooter`` a 4.2 in rebarrelled Luger. Aside from Epps, Lugercollector has some available from time to time in the EE...

From the RCMP website:

Individuals do not need to be grandfathered to acquire a prohibited handgun if:
•the handgun was made before 1946, and
•the handgun is currently registered in Canada, and
•they are the child, grandchild, brother, sister or spouse of the lawful owner.

Individuals who acquire a prohibited handgun in these circumstances will have 12(7) printed on their firearms licence. This means that they can lawfully possess a pre-1946 handgun passed on by a direct relative, but they are not authorized to acquire other prohibited handguns.

Any prohibited firearms that an individual acquires must have been registered in Canada on December 1, 1998. This means that even if a licence holder has grandfathered status, they cannot bring a prohibited firearm into Canada as a new import and they cannot acquire a prohibited firearm that has never been registered.

I'm not a Luger expert, but I collect handguns and sort of pay attention to the problems that they have. WWII-era army (not Navy or Artillery) Lugers probably are the least expensive, but all of the Army Lugers have 4" barrels, as far as I know. Barry Jensen of Bits of Pieces in Delta, BC has "restricted" barrels that he'll put on a Luger and re-register it as "restricted". You can call him and talk it over. They're interesting guns from a number of points of view, and are probably one of the three or four most recognized handgun outlines known. They do have problems in actual operation, but they're fun to have and occasionally shoot.
 
Gun laws are not something that one should be ignorant about AND then spread bs.
This is important stuff and if you don't know what you're talking about you aren't helping.
Your "opinion" doesn't count in a court.
 
Mines restricted in .30 luger which runs about $60/ box, and I don't really shoot it enough to reload. I love it though and it actually is very accurate.

oh now I'm ignorant about all gun law because I wasn't aware prohibs made prior to 1946 can be inherited? You're ignorant assuming I don't know any gun law. I'll come to your place with the entire firearms act and question you and if you get any part wrong I'll say that your ignorant.

Now if I had said here that youre allowed to carry a concealed pistol in Canada I wouldn't have complained about you comment.

Take your medicine...not saying it's right, but people get snarly because you can probably find a similar comment time and time again. I tend to Google something that sounds odd to me first and then comment. Google would have brought you right to the relevant RCMP web page and you could have gone "wow I didn't know that!", "instead of why are they picking on me?". There's a place for opinion, and commenting on firearms regs. isn't one of them.

Nice pistol Dogzilla. I'd love a Luger! Just can't afford one worth buying.

no, the point is that you were ignorant about THAT law....and here's the thing: when it ones to stuff that can get guys thrown in jail, you should probably keep your word hole shut unless you are SURE...and even then it may be prudent to double check your facts before posting.

Snarky? Maybe.....but better that than someone getting put into a old of legal hurt because you felt like offering a legal "opinion"

Whatever. How could my opinion land someone in jail? If anything its the other way around since I said they cannot get the prohibited.
