Calving season coyotes

70km/h winds n rain and 15 degrees today. Stayed at home but I know there was more calves born in the last 24hr.

Going to be -20 by morning so I'll be out at daylight. Crazy weather to go with these crazy times.

Out here, calving season is a shift work routine, 24/7, You Snooze, You Lose, no wonder you guys lose so many calves. Lot of bucks being thrown away there. :confused:

?? I dont think hes lost any calves yet but it's just the start. It's happened in the past so when the farmer sees 5 standing in his field he thought he would call me since he doesnt own a gun anymore

When I said I know there was more born its because I was there last night til dark and was talking to the farmer in the barn.

Two more this morning. Seen 2 at daylight, They heard me driving down the laneway breaking ice in the truck because they were lookin my way when I left the barn.. I snuck up to the old snowblower and got a shot at the closest one. Heard a yelp and seen 3 coyotes take off!!

Ran 50 yards to get a better look and seen two coyotes come out the other side of the ravine. The one I shot only went 30 yards and piled up. I left that one there and went and sat in my usual spot. At 730 I heard a few howling to the north so I answered on my hand calls. 10minutes goes by and I seen a coyote 500 yards away going downwind, No shot.

An hour later I look back and theres a coyote standing 50 feet from the dead one. Shoot it and he went down in a heap. This coyote came from across the road and was standing completely downwind of me but he was also downwind of the dead coyote so he didnt smell me.

217 yard shot on the first, 256 yard on the second.

-20 this morning definitely had them out moving. That's #6 n #7 for the week.

Gota a good laugh out of your bawling calf misadventure, I have seen cows go through hot wires,bawling all the way, to get to bawling calves!
Keegs if you can't get the yotes down you need a calving pasture where you can control things more.

Sat out there last night as it was a cold and sunny evening. Heard two howling to each other very faintly just at dark but other than that it was pretty quiet. Did see 9 deer in the next field over which was nice to see.

Forgot the mention, The coyote I did skin (right one in the last picture) had a badly broken front leg and broken top canine tooth.

The leg bone was sticking out of the skin just below the elbow but was healed up in a big ball of scar tissue. I think he was shot but no way to tell. I'd didnt even notice he was limping or not.

They are tough buggers. I shot one many years ago with a front leg gone at the elbow. Mostly healed over and in good shape.
Wolves on the other hand, travel so much, they will not survive for very long with a broken or injured leg.
 
Yes, me as well please . I have a local farmer who needs help as he’s lost 4 calves this year to coyotes.
Offered my services but could use an experts advice on calling etc.

They have gotten 3 calves on me this season. I give up asking people to hunt them. Everyone can fly a kite when they come asking to elk hunt. I’m buying a caller and booking days off sporadically over the next while to deal with it myself.

I'm having the opposite problem. Wanting to hunt them every chance I get but no farmers to let me hunt on their land.
 
Merely an observation. You folks must have bigger 'yotes or smaller cattle than out here.
I'm all on board with feeding 'yotes 'Pills', we've just never had an issue with cattle calving and 'yotes.
Mind you, Dad killed them for the hides...so they were a touch scarce around the place ( South across the fence from CFB Suffield ).
I saw 4-5 fixing to pull down a Buck one time. Couldn't help Bambi out as it was just over top ( heading down) of a river valley, driving a pickup pulling a trailer on icy roads... bothers me still.
I'm on the creek now too.
Coyotes just ain't never been a problem around our livestock.

Neighbour punched 2 wolves yesterday morning,checking calves.Hopefully he sends them my way.
