Camouflage clothing, yay or nay?

My field pants are dark grey UA tactical. Have a mid weight Camo jacket I sometimes wear. Usually a black synthetic fill Marmot hoodie jacket. My really warm insulated Goretex bib pants are camo.

I live in AB so i'm not forced to wear orange. I do wear camo, but nearly my entire hunting "ensemble" came off the rack at crappy tire, where most of the functional clothing comes exclusively in camo patterns. I want to be warm/dry/comfortable when i'm out, and I'd rather let inexpensive canadian tire gear get dirty/torn/bloody than my expensive gear that is not camo that I use for camping/hiking/backpacking. Canadian Tire camo gear might not make or break whether or not I get an animal, but it's cheap to replace, and pretty darn functional for what it costs.

I agree with jory, camo wont be the deciding factor in whether or not you get a white tail, same goes for caliber since it is all about shot placement rather than caliber (i.e. people who argue that you need a 30-06 or .308 and that the .223 wont be good enough) .
But having all the "good tools" helps (although the benefits might be almost insignificant).

I wear camo simply because its what is availible here, cheap, warm and functional.

I find camo gear to be generally comfortable for the outdoors.

Lastly, i agree that the patterns are overdone usually. But i guess thats to appeal to us as opposed to the game.

Nothing says red neck better or funnier then a full family of camo, in February at Tim Horton’s. But seriously are the deer shooting back, what’s wrong with your regular weekend cloths.

When hunting deer you MUST wear blaze orange (so says the law)

When hunting turkey you don't need to (so says the law)
every province is different in these regards. In BC most hunting is done on public land, in recent years it seems if you choose to wear orange it is taken as an invitation to come see what you are doing, usually happens on que with when the animals you are after are set to be moving through that area.

Orange is not a requirement in BC, at least someone decided to allow us a choice.

Same problem as orange, would be fine if people knew how to mind their own business rather than wanting to come have a chat and disturb someone else's hunt, which is illegal, but very hard to get a CO on scene to enforce it

Camo is nice, but playing the wind and staying still is even better :)

exactly, i once called a coyote form over a half section away (shot at 50 yards) through a freshly cut hay field wearing a white t-shirt because i forgot my favorite light jacket, if you don't move too much they don't know what's going on

one of the coyote guys famous for videos (Randy Anderson maybe?) did a video of himself calling coyotes on xmas day dressed as santa claus

as for actual hunting i've watched guys from a distance in full camo walk across a snow field, let's just say they weren't invisible

Yes wear camo if you want while hunting - It's part of the outdoor hunting experience and identifies you as part of the fraternity.

Just make sure it mostly all matches!! Mismatched camo looks amaturerish.

except the purpose is to break up the human silhouette so matching outfits end up looking like a big blob

Part of the problem is that most camo is too closed patterned and too dark. In the store it looks great but in the outdoors anything past 50-75 yards and you look like a dark blob.

I generally look for lighter shades and more open style patterns as I find them to be more effective. Asking your hunting partner as to how good your pattern is blending in is a good idea.

I have had more ability to harvest animals while wearing blue jeans and a green army sweater (orange vest and hat when required by law) than with scent blockers and full camo. I don't smoke or use perfumed detergents, maybe that helps? This has been my go to for small game, deer and turkey.

IMO, the right camo can work well for deceiving humans and some birds, notably turkey, geese, and ducks, but is the least of your problem with most other game. Scent and sound are of little importance to humans but an ordinary person walking around in stiff footwear and ignoring wind or air flow direction is doing the equivalent of going through the countryside in a firetruck while spraying orange smoke with the siren on. Camo can paint that truck in a subdued colour but it's the senses humans don't have much of that can really give us away unless we're conscious of them. And of course your camo can be great but the average white person's face glows like a spotlight, so paint it up.
