G'day

We're thinking of purchasing a school bus to turn into our mobile moose camp.

Has anyone has experience with this? Any tips and tricks?

I'm also wondering what you paid for insurance.

Thanks,
Fordy

Tint or paint the windows and pending on how many are in your camp try and set up a cot system similer to the old subs hinged at the wall side then chain at the other side so they can be pulled up and outta the way might be a good start
insurance well its a pleasure vehicle used maybe once a year on aweekend
for a total milage of 50km is what you tell your broker and register it as an RV and the insurance should be cheap as long you dont get into an accident
that someone sees lol

If all the guys in the camp are mechanics go for it.

If one guy in the camp is a mechanic, go for it. But the dude who is a mechanic is going to be pissed off with all the time he will spend working on it.

If none of you are mechanics, go for it but get as new a model as you can find.

Been there done that, wouldnt trade my outfitters tent for it.

Hi,

It's not at all difficult to convert into a movable hunt camp, it also depends on the size your getting. Windows are easy to cover and bunk beds shouldn't be too much work... for the average Handyman. Keep 2 seats in the front and invert one in the middle and install a table between to play cards.

Lots of work.. but easy work ;)

Once all the benches are out, you will find out that there's plenty of room for 4 guys or more. I've seen one owned by friends and wow, with a propane stove and cupboards, gun racks, it's easy to make confortable, especially if you've seen some of the so called "hunt Camp". the kind of which you would prefer to sleep outside if you know what I mean..

We were going to buy one for our fishing/hunting trips but only one of us 9 guys had the proper driving licence and he wasn't please into the idea to be the "designated driver" .

It's on ice for now

Lots of comments concerning mechanical problems ... just pick something with decent engine/transmission.. as for the body.. well...once painted camo..no one will see the defects :D

Good luck, nice project.

hmmm....... the crew I got invited to hunt withand hunted with last fall, has an old 1980 GMC bus hmmm..... it breaks down a lot but it is really well set up . but it broke down again last fall . hmmm.....I fixed the bus. hmmm... I am a licenced mechanic buy trade . hmmm.... me thinks there is a method to these treacherous old buggers' maddness. oh well the hunting up north is great and we got two Moose last year so what the hell . and just when I thought I was getting old enough to be the treacherous one.

We saw a hunting bus broke down while we were driving to our moose hunt. Four days later, we ran into them setting up camp, they spent 3 days getting it going and were only half way to their area.So if you're retired or have lots of time to get there and back, go for it. I couldn't be bothered, and the ride sucks. Take a truck and an outfitter tent. Sets up in no time.

No more chance of break downs than driving up with a 5-10 yr old truck:rolleyes: Actually not bad sittin in their visiting with some old friends:) So far our break downs have been limited to the pick-ups going with us. Changed a auto tranny up there once & drove a Dodge diesel home once with f--ked clutch!

Yep slower, but how mcuh faster than 80-90kms do you want to drive before you start worring about speed limit infractions??

We have rented 2 converted buses for this fall, booked through a outfitter
up north. He owns the buses, drives them out to the bush for you, he's a
logger and says he knows where the moose are. No muss no fuss, everything included, cheap enough, already received pictures looks great, should be fun.
We are already talking about next year purchasing a good quality camp tent.
:D

It's been a while I guess....forgot about this thread.

We ended up purchasing a bus last spring. (1200 bucks), needed a brake line for the safety. Passed the emissions with flying colors.
It's a 1993 72 pass, GMC School Bus. The mill is a Caterpillar straight 6 turbo diesel. We cut all the seats out and used the foam for the beds. Put some wooden racks on top, hitch on the back, painted and ready to go.

It's not fancy...but it is functional. The trip with 6 or 7 guys is a blast!! Last year was it's maiden voyage, Oh what a party!

We picked up a hitchhiker, some young kid from France who was packing across Canada. I was sleeping in the back at the time, but woke up when I heard the guys yelling to pick him up.

One of the boys comes back and explains this hitchhiker and says I should come up and "freak him out"!

So, I wait 5 minutes and walk up front in my boxers and other plaid apparal. I looked like I'd already been in the bush for a week!

All the guys say "Hey Man!!" and I return the gesture. I then look at this newcomber at the table. He was a softspoken french kid. Young.

With a stern voice and somewhat cross look I say "Who the phuck are you?!!"

He was a little shaken already... "Softly he gestures and says "My name is Jean, I am from France"...

I reply "WELL...Jean from France...Do you like to 4UCK!!"

One of my buddies yells "Cus Fordy SURE DOES!!"..

He now has a look of complete and utter terror on his face! Oh it was priceless.

I couldn't contain myself, so I introduced myself and told him I was yanking his chain... We dropped him off a few hours later in North Bay. He had a most EXCELLENT time and has plently of stories for home!

Here's a few pics of the bus for your viewing pleasure.

I've just about finished converting a (beater) camper trailer I bought to a hunt camp. Actually it's more like a bunk house than a camp. We have a large tent for a common area and a canopy for a cooking area, but could move inside if the weather's really bad. It'll sleep 6, but we're stuck with having vehicles large enough to pull it, and others to bring up gear and ATVs. Not quite as neat and self-contained as your set-up.

What did you end up paying for insurance??
Mine was $500 which started gettin a little much when I only used it once a year!

Next problem was when it sat around so much, stuff like brake calipers, fuel shut of solinoids would start to seize up :(

Keep a carefull watch on your trailer for stress cracks in the tounge-frame area, the buss puts a lot of stress on them because of the very abrupt jolts they get from the bus.

Sure had a lot of good times in mine thou :)

nice set up..ive always liked the idea of the buses for a camp..do these buses have to be safety certified every year?

Nope, only has to be certified once. (Thank God)

The rules may be different when they're being used for schools, and I don't think they can be used for more than 12 years.
