Can A Thompson Sub Gun Be Had?

Mr AR15 this sounds fantastic...

Whats a ballpark price?

If you can afford a ballpark, you can afford the kit.

I wonder if the user will be able to insert the Ruger mag into the dummy mag himself. I would like to get a hold-open mag or something.

I don't like those banana mags they have in the 22 calibre Thompson so I was glad you hear that they are making a straight dummy.

EARLYTB, I'm certainly curious about your Thompson with an ALUMINUM barrel... I have an all original Auto Ordnance Thompson Model 1927A3 which has a STEEL barrel. The receiver is a light alloy however, due to the reduced recoil of the smaller round.

Below is a pic of the A-O Thompson in my collection. Kahr has never offered a .22 Tommy. Auto Ordnance was the end. Mine is from the '70s and have a couple of banana mags with it. Great little package!

Best regards, and HAPPY NEW YEAR! ~ ~ ~ mauser

Nice Thompson . Mine is a 1927A1 45 acp . since they were restricted when I got it many yrs ago I shortened the 16" barrel to the original length . Was a fun gun to shoot . still looks good on the wall . Drum & all

Hi #1bcshooter. I lived on Vancouver Island for 18 years back in the '70s and '80s. Came back down here due to wife and I both had elderly Moms who needed us. Her 93-year-old Mom still lives with us for caretaking.

Couple of years ago I had a 27A1 .45acp which appeared to be stainless steel, even the drum mag. It too was an A-O so Kahr just ignored me when I asked about it.

That gun was written up on MachingunBooks.com forum down here which ran to seven pages. No one could figure it out. Finally another collector wanted it worse than I did so I sold it to him. He's still got it and it's still a mystery.

I've lost interest in the big calibers and collect older, cheapy (in their day), single-shot .22rf handguns and rifles. Got a couple of fairly rare Canadian boys rifles too: Ross Mdl. 1912 and little known Tobin which was once a prize for selling 5 subscriptions to Rod And Gun magazine. It was made in Woodstock, Ont. One sold a month or so ago up there for $750. It was in excellent condition, bought years earlier from Flayderman, and still had a tag on it from the Winchester Museum! I got my little guy for a hundred bucks just weeks earlier. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while...

Here's the Tobin.

Here's jacket patch we had for one of the local collector clubs when I lived up there. That's a penny in the pic to show scale.

I have the same Thompson as you, when I got it my buddy who has the 45 ACP semi auto version to look at it he said it was lighter than his. When we touched a magnet to the barrel it did not stick. The use of barrel liners or barrel inserts is quite common on 22 calibre hand guns. If you want to verify this you could try the tommygun collectors association.

There was a fellow on rimfirecentral that made one out of some old surplus parts and a 10/22...man did it look good

It sure did, if the thread is still there he has the info on the 10 bucks worth of material he used. Sarco has/had the wood. vertical foregrip adds large to the price.
I toyed with the idea last winter but the challange is that any two piece stock on a 10/22 is going to be a weak gun prone to "humping" the reciever.

I seen this thread awhile back and thought why don't I make my own Thompson 10/22. First thing I took scrap sheet metal, bent it over a 2x4. Then welded a bottom peice to make it boxed in. Then cut off some of the magazine guide on the 10/22 action. Then I cut off the cocking lever and welded on a stainlees steel blade from a kichen knife that I cut square. I then welded on a nut to the back peice of the blade so I could screw on a sks cocking knob(drilled and tapped). At this piont I took everything apart and cut out a section to allow for the trigger group. Then put it all back together to drill holes for the assembly pins. The barrel was then cut. And I made the sights from sheet metal. All that was left was the wood. I started on the front peice and then the pistol grip. Then I got excited and didn't take my time on the stock. I temperarily put a black piece of wood and screwed it to the factory mag until I get a drum mag.
I wood like to get real furnature but that would make my project cost go from $0.00 to whatever. I am still not done I have not grinded down the welds and done proper body work yet. Also I will be reduing the stock and putting the router grouve in the front grip. I would like everyone to know I did this with no pictures of a thompson and that is why there isn't as much space between the mag and front grip. The next one will be perfect. Timeline so far is about 10 hours.

With respect to the 10/22, as long as you don't modify the action in any way to change how it functions you can dress it up to look like whatever you want. You must also not go below 26" overall length or it changes its classification to restricted. The RCMP told me that you really should be able to see or have easy access to the serial number if your going to make it look like something else. Navy shooter is making a 1917 water cooled machine gun from a 10/22 and I just order the plans to make one myself.

The reason I know this is because we are building a Thompson M1A dress up kit for the 10/22 (for resale) and I needed to be sure it would not be a problem from a legal standpoint. The RCMP said "all your doing is playing Mr. Dress Up with a 10/22, but in the end its still only a 10/22". With any luck we should have some pics of the kit up in a couple of weeks.

hhehehehehee!

the 1022 and the 44 deerfield are pretty much identical in size and layout, I think originally the 1022 was a 22 version of the 44, one of the 44'S dressed up like a tommy gun would be a fun toy,bit of a pricey plinker though

I always thought of it as a .22 version of the Mini-14 ;)

...one of the 44'S dressed up like a tommy gun would be a fun toy,

Sadly, still restricted to 5 round capacity as a semi...:(

bit of a pricey plinker though

Yep.

Some thoughts...:);):)
