Can I shoot Moose with a .204? It finally came....

So, did you get a chance to check it out on moose?

Who cares when you got entertainment like this ->

Gotta say, the difference between 3lbs and 6lbs is very minimal.
Besides, I think flexibility counts for a lot.

It's not minimal, it's DOUBLE. Besides, being able to spot your own shots at a quarter mile counts for a lot, too. Shoot a '250, and you have no idea if you need to come up, down, left or right unless you have a spotter. A .204, you just watch the impact through the lens. Doesn't sound like such a huge advantage till you've been there and tried it. I was skeptical at first too

Very excellent post BigRed :D

Joe and I got home from work and ran out to the bench... quick site in and I shot a three shot group at 100 yards.
I shot it as quick as I could reload and resight, about 25seconds total. I could not get a reading on the Chrony... not enough light I guess. Maybe the bullets are going so fast they are passing into another dimension and defeating the chrony...
I was using a B&C reticle on the 4.5-14 VXIII, I am not going to leave this scope on that .204. It needs finer crosshairs for sure.

In Manitoba you can legally use a .204 on moose but you can't load it down to .22 LR specs and use it on chickens. Go figure.

Centrefire Rifles
A centrefire rifle may not be used to hunt upland game birds, wild turkey or migratory game birds.

course you can shoot and kill a moose with 204 everybody knows that cavemans used to kill dinosaurs with 17 rem and if they can do that you can kill a moose with a 204

The dime kept sliding off the target... loonies stick better.
I was most impressed by the absence of recoil... watching the holes appear in the target is very cool.
The .204 is as loud as a 22-250 but kicks like a .22lr.
I have got to get out in the killing fields with Chilly and Darryl next week and ventilate some groundhogs.

Gotta work up a Big Game load... 40 grain ballistic tip at 3900fps should not do to much meat damage eh?

Looks like one shot buckshot to me.

Your gonna need to sight that pea shooter in at 220 yards if yer gonna wanna kill dirt pigs in my pastures there pokey! Them pigs are gonna see them there fancy ass sun specs you wear and their gonna turn themselves inside out and down the tunnel they go. I couldn't even get close to em today....closest shot was about 65 yards playing peek-a-bang with a pup in his hole. I learned him how a 55 grain BT out of a Swift makes a friggin big hole in the face. All the others were out at 200+. The feilds are real short and zero cover so they see you, you see them...they smart, they run...they stupid, they die!

35 bergers are definitely worth giving a try for yotes if you want to minimize pelt damage. Just be sure not to hit any major bone on the way in.

They are likely a little overkill for moose though.

I zeroed it for 200... it is now a half inch high at 100 and 3.5 low at 300... I have not gone 400-500 yet.:)
The reason the sod poodles are not letting you get close Chilly is because all they see is 250 pounds of Ugly dragging his knuckles across the field drooling and chanting "Kill da Varmints, Kill da Varmints!":runaway:

funny enough the last thing three dirt pigs saw was a shiny heavy contour muzzle and a really freakin fast ballistic tip headin' to great them in a special way. I guess I'm not the smallest, maybe if I walk sideways ....ah na that won't work either...dahm beer! I think what some of them heard was once the Bushnell Elite 1500 was on them, I was thinkin out loud...bye bye little bastard.

I can't wait for Norinco to make an SKS in .204. That would be a sweet rifle. A moose, deer, varmit and target gun, plus you could paint it black with some truck box liner and go for the tacticool factor. Top this with a high end tasco for the ultimate in affordable practicality.

Wouldn't that look great at a 1000 yard match. :D
