When my PAL/RPAL get issued and are being sent, can I phone the CFC to get my PAL number to get the number and I can buy a handgun with just the number?

Or will I be required to use the card?

The won't give it to you over the phone. I got my licence in the mail the week before this past xmas... after I saw on the website that the licence has been issued, I called in and they wouldn't give it to me.

If you know the number and buy online or by telephone you would just supply the seller your number, The only place I ever had to send to send a copy of my RPAL was SFRC.

If you have an existing PAL, your licence # wont change (even upgrading to RPAL). If it's a new licence then you will have to wait for the piece of plastic to show up in your hands.

Almost every online dealer I've dealt with so far (five so far) wants to see a scanned copy of my PAL, especially for restricted. Depends who you deal with. Some only want it for a first time purchase - I assume they note in their records that they've actually seen it.

Anyway, don't panic. The guns will still be there when you get the card. There's always more where that came from. :D

Don't lie to the man. You know perfectly well that the best ones will be gone by then.

OP: You can buy and pay for firearms without any PAL; you just can't have them transferred to you until after you get your PAL.

My wife and I were given our RPAL#'s over the phone, the same day that our applications indicated completed online. This is in Ontario, however. Also have found that most dealers do want to see a copy of the PAL (front and back), but there are exceptions.......

X2

I bought my shotgun in person with PAL written on a sticky note (dealer was good with it and CFC said no problem).

The CFC does not give out the number but your CFO will.
Some stores will accept it without a card and some won't, that is purely store policy. If you have the number then the CFC will approve the transfer although some stores don't believe this is possible. If the store doesn't think it is possible tell them to call the CFC and the CFC will approve the sale during their normal hours.

I tried that, I got turned down. I was told I needed to have my RPAL to place an order. I wanted to pre-order a PWS MK1 series AR since the wait time for it to come in would be anywhere from 3-4mts (or longer?) and figured I should have my RPAL by the time it arrives in the store, just so I wouldn't have to wait till June to place an order and then wait until December for it to arrive. If it arrives earlier than my RPAL, I have no problems with them holding it till my RPAL arrives. Ah well. I'll have to play it by ear.

I put a down payment on a gun without a PAL#. As soon as my PAL was approved I phoned my CFO office (BC) for my PAL# no problem. I provided that to the store and they were accepting of that. YMMV. I had my new gun before I had my new plastic PAL card or paper registration forms.

Damn. Yeah, I guess it depends on the store and what they are comfortable doing. I only know one place that sells PWS and they won't accept a pre-order without a PAL/RPAL number. No worries, I'll play it by ear.

IMO if they won't take a down payment and hold it until you get your license I'd take my business elsewhere. Check out some of the sponsors at the top of the page.
