Can the 30-06 show enough might to drop moose.

Moose are easy to kill, pretty well anything you shoot out of your 06 will do the job.I have seen enough of them killed stone dead with "not reccomended" moose medicine like the 250 savage and the 303 to know that anything bigger is more than adequate., just shoot em thru the lungs and they will crumple.

Who said that a magnum was required to kill moose? Why is it assumed that anyone using a magnum can't hunt or shoot straight? A bad shot is a bad shot, doesn't matter what cartridge you're using. Some shooters just like big bullets, and those that don't, well don't use them. What's the problem?

Anyone using a magnum to "compensate" for bad shooting skills, would still be a bad shooter with a .270 or .30-06.;)
 
Not sure about this whole magnum hunter are bad shooters thing.. Woudn't you think your shot would be worse with a magnum? So in actuallity Non magnum shooters are just not good enough shoters to be able to shoot a magnum?

I fond that the most unskilled shooters are often packing regular ol' 30-06's 270's and 303's that they trot out once a year...So shoudl I detemrine that those that use "standard" cartridges are unskilled? Hmmm:confused:


Personally, I would never run a magnum. The recoil is punishing and only serves to exaggerate ones flinch

There is enough selection of bullet styles and weigths in any farily common magnum cartridge, in factory ammo, for any hunter to do any job.:)

.30-06 for a canadian moose is somewhere in the middle. Remember, the venerable 30-06 was considered a magnum way back when. Here in newfoundland , our moose (eastern canadian) are relatively not as big as western canadian moose, but they can grow as big, some larger. There have probably been more moose taken with a .303 in newfoundland than anywhere else in the world. So a 30-06 will surely do the job clean and humanely. We usually shoot 180 grain, but as said, those bigger canadian's could take a 220 in 30-06. As far as yardage. There was one bull winkle shot in newfoundland at 525 yards with a 180 grain load from a 30-06:eek:. It dropped roughly 50 yards from where it was shot. Personally I would not shoot at any animal at that range and wouldn't advise others either.(my point is that it can be done) but not recomended!! Limit yourself to 300 -350 at MAX, even with big magnums, there shouldn't be a need for a much longer shot on a moose. My rifle shoots 2 - 2 1/2 inches high at 100 yards, drops in around 200, 4/5/6 inches low at 300, and about a 2 foot drop(24 inches) at 400.I personally would not take a shot past 300. My rifle can do it, I have made shots on target at that range, but in the field, on a live animal, I would not. Get to know your rifle, and youself better before making a long shot.
 
30-06 has killed more moose in NW Ontario than likely any other cartridge, or several cartridges combined. Ranges are usually not horribly long -- 250 yards is a long shot, IME.

I have used a number of different bullets, but I have now settled on the TSX 168 gr. I started out with 180 gr Win PP. They worked fine. I then used some Speers in 180. Okay as well. The I discovered the 165 Hornady BTSP, Interlock and loaded them for years and killed moose pretty handily. I am not opposed to putting two rounds into a moose if he won't co-operate and tip over tral quick. 180 Partitions work pretty good, too.

Moose at 400 yards??? SHot one . . . 30-06 150 gr PSP. Bang flop. Never tried it again -- always got closer - - - Dad said so. :eek:

I don't think a 30-06 would kill a moose. To kill a moose you must use a big magnum.
 
I shot a 3 1/2 year old bull moose in Quebec in 2001 at 275 yards (and that is not paced out, thats with a range finder) in a full walk with my 7600 Remington 30-06 with a 180 grain factory bronze point. He kicked hit four feet off the ground and made it about 60 yards before he dropped stone dead. Bullet punched through the heavy part of the front shoulder, broke but was caught in the hide on the far shoulder. I shot a bigger bull at closer range the year before at a closer range same gun same bullet dropped in his tracks. Since I have shot two more with my 300 win mag but would use my 30-06 any day without hestitation and it still gets used when I walk cause the 300 mag is a brick to carry. Good luck hunting..

People in newfoundland are allowed to use a min..of .270 to hunt moose, and many, many moose in newfoundland have been taken with a .270. How can anyone say that they don't think a .30-06 would kill a moose!!!! Yes you can ... but no you should not! You need to use a cartridge that was developed after the 18th century to kill Moose that were born in this one!
