Can you "blacken" stainless steel?

yes but it is very difficult to obtain an even finish and it will be matte, polished is not possible with the method i know of

I have not used this product ,but I plan to.
stainless steel blackener 370 from Caswell Canada in Port Perry Ont.

I've used it to blacken some door hardware. It came out real nice looking for door hardware but it was not consistent and had a rusty patina to it making it look like antique metal hardware.

Is there any chemical treatment that will permanently change stainless steel black that wont damage the firearm in any way?

To my understanding no chemical treatment will permanently change steel to any colour. It's a surface treatment that will eventually wear off with age or use. You can however reapply the treatment when the wear starts to show.

black oxide, IIRC is something that ATRS does or did to their stainless barrels.

Yes I know it's only going to be the surface that is turned black, personally I consider gun bluing to be a permanent surface finish.

Not a big fan of paint or duracoat or other products like that, was hopping there might be a product that works like gun bluing.

I will be trying to change a S&W 625 revolvers barrel and frame a matte black, was looking at there M&P revolvers and think they look quite slick.

google Dave Severn's Hardhat. I think it is what you are looking for. Next problem he is in the states and I don't know about shipping guns to the states for gun smithing.

There is. As mentioned, ATR offers the service, and I believe R.Smith was aswell... or was. Same as hot blueing, but different chemicals.

Let me try this again, black oxide.

It's a chemical conversion process much like parkerizing or bluing and is the only option for stainless that I'm aware of unless you go with a coating.

Melonite is the finish for stainless that FN uses and the same finish is used on Glock but is called Tenifer.
I believe this is the only durable finish that is able to be applied to Stainless.

Yes, you can blue stainless steel.

I own a very high quality rifle made in 1936.
The steel is marked "rostfrei", the finish is blued.

Currently you might try Brownell's.
Look up "Oxynate 84" on Google.

2 cents.

It can be plated nickel and then copper. Copper can be blackened to a wonderful patina. Depending on the stainless alloy, the nickel may be the most difficult step, but it is almost certainly doable.
