Just finishing up my first AR build (or so I think!) I was leaning towards a Magpul hand guard. But I really like the looks of the free floating barel. I have a 14.5" norc upper. Somewhere I read the norc sight post is a nightmare to remove. Has anyone done this before and have any advise and/or pictures? This isn't intended as a bench gun nor do I want to run around and shoot. Just casual shooting mostly standing position. I am more after the look of the free float set up, without adding any mall ninja accessories to them.

Any pinned fsb is work to get off and back on, barrel will usually get scratched up in the process as well. Any ff handguard will work, but if you don't care then there are 2 piece railed handguards that will give the look and rail options without all the work.

Most people find that is is easier to just dremel off the tower of the front sight post. Thus making a low pro gas block, there have been a bunch of threads about this. I will try to find one if someone doesn't post it first.

I looked that route but I am not a huge fan of the carbine length. Wish I knew a little more about what to look for before I got the upper.
I didn't realize you could cut the post down like that, but it makes sense now that its been mentioned. That would be awesome if you shared that!
You can't install a ff tube just by cutting down the fsb because you need to install the new barrel nut. You also need to cut off the delta ring and bayo lug if you are going to install something like a Troy rail that uses the existing barrel nut.

So why can you re-use the barrel nut on some and not others? How do you tell the difference when you are trying to pick one? It sucks for me because of my location, I cant think of one store within 500km that stocks anything AR to even look at. So I rely on you guys lol
It depends, some manufactures use a propratary barrel nut as part of the rail mounting system. Your best bet is to check the parts list of the rail you want and if it includes a barrel nut you will most likely have to remove the gas block.
Which in itself is not a big deal, just a little time with the dremel. Go slow and check your progress often and you will have no issues removing the gas block. And just factor in a new gas block to your build.

My buddy just removed my front sight yesterday. He did his last month..broke 2 punches..air hammered the pin closet to handguard. When he did mine, first one came out with some "encouragment" and same thing with 2nd pin...broke two punches air, but with a lot of muscle he got it out.

So I picked up a hand guard decided to cut down the sight post. Here's my next stumbling block. How would one get the gas tube out so you an turn the barrel nut?

The gas tube is held in place with a small roll pin horizontally through the front sight block. You can drift it out either way with a 1/16" punch. Then just flex it a little so it clears the FSB and pull it forward to remove it.
I picked up an ATI free float kit on my way up to work, it comes with its own barrel nut that the hand guard screws onto.
I promise I wont bug you guys until I get back next week. This was something I was hoping I could do sitting in my room in the evening but its not looking like it anymore.
