Canada is never, ever going to stop killing seals: Your tell-all guide to the seal hu

When we were kids the old man would get a box of flippers sent up every spring. We ate a lot of things growing up and the box of flippers arriving was not one we looked forward to. Black, greasy and tastes similar to muskrat. To each their own but not a taste I would go looking for ever again.

Trapping is no different. There isn't a lot of value there either but it's sustainable and it provides income to a fair number of people. It's a great way of life. The same people that say it's wrong have no problem bonking a fish on the head. If you don't like it have fun eating cabbage. I hope the tradition continues forever.

Heard a good joke:

A seal walks into a club...

Kinda like one of my favourite St. Paddy's day jokes:

An Irishman walks out of a bar...

No, really, it could happen.

So what does seal taste like? Also, why the club? Wouldn't a 22LR into the brain pan be quicker?

Actually we dont use clubs at all , the hackapick is mainly used to ensure the skull is crushed after it is shot . Seal hunters mainly use 22 centerfire . Mostly .223/.556 cause of the cost . I know it sounds weird to have to crush the skull after the seal is dead , but thats what the dfo wants . The flipper tendons also have to be cut before the seal is moved to make sure it is bled out . The hunt is very humane and closely watched by dfo . Most of the footage you see is old and exaggerated. I have killed 100's great hunt . And seal meat is quite good .

My boss told me of an older fella he knew went sealing back in the 60s. Said they used to have a few shooters on the boat. The guy carried 2 30/30 rifles and a backpack full of ammo. When one got too hot he would use the other one. Apparently he would shoot hundreds of them per day.
Now there’s 4 million of the damn things eating the guts out of all the cod. We can cull them can it and send it to starving nations. Kill two birds with one stone so to speak.

Old guy that my grandmother dated told me similar stories , he said the barrel of the 30-30 got so hot it would burn the fur on the seal if you laid the gun on it . We actually had divers come in back home a few years ago . My dad had the video they took . Cod on the bottom 3 feet deep . Nothing touched but the guts bit out . A real slaughter all done by seals .

Live on the West Coast of BC... any salt water fisherman will tell you he wishes they could hunt seals. They are everywhere! That and sea lions.

I recently heard that the seals consume millions of dollars worth of smolt being released out of the Fraser River. Not sure how legit this is... but it seems pretty damn feasible to me

Thank you, sir. You have just made me a little less dumb. I had always thought seals and sea lions were 2 different names for the same critter, kinda like cougar and mountain lion, so after reading your post, I googled it. Now I know.

Part of my job involves mapping the ice in the Gulf of St-Lawrence and around Newfoundland. I can say first hand that there are millions of seals out there. I have never seen anything like it. To give an example......take a plain white plate and sprinkle pepper on it. Lots of pepper. That’s what the seals look like on the ice from the air. At first you can’t see them because your brain cant process the sheer quantity. Once you realize that EVERY black spot represented a seal it comes into perspective. And calving season is a whole other experience.
