Canada Post Love-Hate and All Things "Shipping" Thread

Don't mail firearms Express Post or Priority by CP, they will not put them on aircraft...If they are aware of it being a firearm that is....Mail Expedited with sig with insurance and you shouldn't have a problem...and make sure you get your Postal codes right...a lot of clerks don't have a clue about geography and will go by the PC only instead of the city so if somebody has said a P instead of a T then it's going to Ontario instead of Alberta...I see these errors five or six times a day on my regular shift.
BTW, look at my trader rating...all but one were firearms...Never an issue, never a hassle...BTW if you ship a lot get a Canada Post Venture Card and save money. If they ask about your business just say yep it's my business.
Oh yeah and I get tired of these Canada Post rants because 99 percent of the time these issues could have been prevented...and just so you all know at least six other guys and one lady on my shift are gunowners/shooters..I work in a rather small plant and yet I can say we probably sort ten to twenty firearms a shift...depending on the season of course.

just wondering, do you work for Canada post? just asking based on saying sort 10 guns a shift

Just had my first really bad experience with them actually.
Shipped a small 22 rifle that was working perfectly. Always worked with no issues.
Went through the mail out West and there is something damaged in the trigger mech after it arrived! :(
Box looked beat upon arrival.
Now after the insurance I put on it.
I'm not going to hold my breath lol

Do not send by Xpresspost!

I ship xpress if it is staying in the southern part of the province where air transport is not involved. Less transit time is more secure in my mind.

xpedited, ground only with signature. (proof of delivery)

This is what I ship by in all other cases, but I have been surprised when sending his method that occasionally it has made it to Calgary and beyond from the GTA in 3/4 days, the only way that would have happened is by air.

There are a lot of delays that are caused by improper packing.

This is usually just good laziness on the sellers part. I once went to value village and bought 1/2 dozen kids snow suits and used the arms and legs for packing, I cant believe there are people stupid enough to send a new owner their $300 or more item in a box with a few pieces of tape on it and loose in the box.

Nation wide, there stats are pretty good for delivery compared to others.

Over 500 packages shipped and recieved between CGN deals and EBAY deals, add me to the 100% no problems pile

I have to say................... I have sent HUNDREDS of guns both ways via Canada Post. Only 1(one) had any damage. (toe of a gun stock cracked but was repairable) , so I don't have a lot of NEGATIVE to add to this thread. I even REALLY REALLY like my delivery man. He has flagged down my truck several times to hand me over a rifle because he knew by seeing my big jeezus truck that I would not be home. I love Canada Post. So there!!! I am officially OUT OF THE CLOSET.

Seen an interesting tidbit on the news last night, it is up too three times cheaper to ship a parcel with the US postal service then by Canada Post! Even when the item is being shipped to an address in Canada!

Now I am not saying you should be smuggling your guns across the border to save on shipping, only that CP has some explaining to do as to why it costs so much more to ship a parcel both here in Canada and over seas as well compared to the US postal service!

.and make sure you get your Postal codes right...a lot of clerks don't have a clue about geography and will go by the PC only instead of the city so if somebody has said a P instead of a T then it's going to Ontario instead of Alberta...I see these errors five or six times a day on my regular shift.

Very interesting .... but I think you could stop at "... a lot of clerks don't have a clue."

My last admittedly "self inflicted" (and I fully acknowledge my screw up) postal screw-up was a long gun purchase for which I had provided the sender (and they dutifully copied accurately):
My FULL Name (it is the ONLY first name/surname combination like it in North America - probably the world and easy to google)
The Street Number
The Street Name and "type" (a "Drive")
The Municipality ( a "Town")
The Province
then I had a "brain cramp!" and provided.
The Wrong postal code (inadvertently I gave my Office Postal Code) BUT this is very interesting and demonstrates that the postal code is also irrelevant because my Office Postal Code was a unique code in that it included - and was restricted to - ONLY ONE BUILDING ... the one I worked at and that all lobby security knew me by first and last name and routinely directed deliveries - from all manner of delivery personnel - addressed to me, to my office daily. And just as an FYI the office postal code was in a different "city" than the balance of the address.

So where did the parcel get delivered???
a) to a person without my first OR last name
b) at a different numbered address than on the label
c) to a "Street" rather than the "Drive" that was clearly identified on the label
d) to a different municipality than identified on the label
e) and to a postal code that did not remotely match the one on the label nor was it in the same municipality as my home or office!

AND when the incorrect recipient of the package informed the postman it wasnt their parcel - they were told to "take it back themselves to the post office and tell the staff there" ... of course the recipients work prevented them getting to to postal station while it was open. And the parcel was heavy and would require that they drive, pay parking stand in line etc etc (all perfectly understandable)

I luckily found the parcel by tracking down/deducing that since it hadnt come to the name/address/municipality OR Postal code on the label AND there was no other person with my first/last name - the only possible option was that it "might" be at an address with a similar street name and so checked the map and I found the one similar name in Southern Ontario.... drove to the street and started knocking on doors .. the 5th door opened and the lady said .. "oh yes .. is this yours? please take it - I dont want it!" Parcel hadnt been opened and stood right by the door. So sxxt happens.

Of course it could be worse!!

When we all are forced to move to "superboxes" no doubt a parcel like that will simply get left outside the box leaning against the curb!

JUST FOR THE RECORD - my own local postal delivery guy is amazing!! and my family and neighbors will miss him a great deal when our service is ended - he is fast, efficient, polite and friendly - always cheerful - and a real credit to Canada Post!!

Ship like you mean it . . .

1 x 4 frame, 3/8's inch plywood, nailed on the bottom and screwed on the top. Corners wrapped with Duct Tape.
Small insurance. Never had one lost. Two late and one shipped from coast to coast arrived early.
The last one was late and the entire amount (insurance included) of $94 was refunded. The weight was less that 35 pounds. Rifle, scope, brass, bullets, and dies. Pack it well and when the top is screwed down . . . shake it for rattles.
Cheaper shipping can be had by keeping the length under one meter but you may not want to ship in a broken down mode unless it is going to your gunsmith.

Canada post lost a rifle of mine going from Calgary to a gunsmith in Vancouver. Neither they or the RCMP seemed too worried about it and they never found it.... the insurance was useless and I didn't even get the shipping price back from them as they claimed it had been delivered. The gunsmith is a good friend so I'll take his word that it wasn't delivered over that of CP saying that it was.

I am also a fan of old-school wooden packaging. In fact, the rifle that is "In transit" came in a homemade box that I photographed due to the rarity of the packaging...

Lovely rifle, Kurgan. I certainly appreciate your concern.

It will show up. Like I posted before, I have had a few that 'went missing' over the years but CP always delievred.

Best,
Ted

I love these threads. Gives me more names to add to my IGNORE list which I use as a reminder list of folk not to deal with in the future.

I've sent and received 100s of pkgs over the years through Canada Post. They only lost one scope. Insurance covered it ASAP. As long as the packing job is done right ..... No problems!
