Canada Post Love-Hate and All Things "Shipping" Thread

I've sent and received 100s of pkgs over the years through Canada Post. They only lost one scope. Insurance covered it ASAP. As long as the packing job is done right ..... No problems!

I said the same until last fall, when I shipped a particularly nice JM 1895 to a fella... and believe me, I package well... paper wrapped, bubble wrapped, padded and double boxed... well it arrived with a splintered stock... the only explanation is that it was run over by a vehicle or forklift. The parcel was insured... I immediately sent the funds to the buyer for a replacement stock set and STILL have not received a cent from CP.

Most of the time I don't insure. I package extremely well and send expedited.

I am loathe to pay CP 2% of the value to not steal my parcel. I figure I have saved enough over the years to pay for a couple rifles if one disappears.

I prefer to take the barreled action out of the stock and pack them side by side. The resulting package is under a metre in length which saves some dollars and more importantly no longer LOOKS like a rifle.

FWIW, I have had parcels arrive VERY late, but never had one lost.

I ship so much stuff between guns and my side job I never buy insurance on anything that's mine. I do offer it to buyers at their expense, and I pay the shipping. I figure for anything that's mine, if I never pay the insurance by the time something of mine gets lost I've already saved enough to pay for it. The nature of insurance is if it's a frequently repeated activity, you're better off without it if no legal costs can be involved as in a car accident. I could buy a reasonable used vehicle by now with what I've saved opting out of comprehensive all these years. So when I total one, or lose a parcel, I've already been paid for it. Insurance companies couldn't be in business if they charged you less over the years than the loss eventually costs.

...oh and as for Canada Post, they are the best shipping service I've ever used, out of those in several countries, and by far. I'll take CP over a courier for a valuable item absolutely any day. Had a couple damaged items, one small one lost ($30), but nowhere near the trouble Fedex / DHL / UPS etc have brought me.

Canada Post is great, good luck without it.

This entire thread is B.S.

Hardly....Kurgan has had a very fine and valuable rifle go missing. Don't know what else he could have done to make sure it got there safely.

I would hate to lose it, and I'm sure you would as well.

business day 9... still "In Transit"... but I'm still holding out hope that it's just late based on the experiences of most (not all) of you.
If it arrives at its intended destination, how do I go about getting a refund?

Your local PO does handle the refunds, but they will be able to tell you how to do it. A full refund, including taxes, will be issued.

I have had some packages arrive very late....but the sender must apply for the refund....and although i pay for the shipping, as the buyer i am also the receiver.

One package was 8 weeks late, one CGN member sent me a postal refund.

Best of luck in the rifle arriving in good shape.

There is a number on the receipt to call and they ask you a few questions.
A while later, the cheque shows up............. to the sender.
Still waiting on a Kijiji refund.
CP dropped my parcel and damaged the goods.
Seller filed a claim and was rewarded with the $100 insurance refund.
Never seen any of that reward yet.

What does one do with this?

Take whoever sold you the item to small claims court. It's always the obligation of the seller to ensure the buyer receives the object of the transaction in proper state, just as it's always the obligation of the buyer to ensure the seller receives payment. Those are the terms of the contract. Canada Post has nothing to do with it.
