Canadian barrel makers

No need to look any further, this guy makes awesome barrels, got 2 of them, one in .308 and the other in 25-06 , both shoot better than I can, and cleaning is a snap.:)
Just enter (Ted Gaillard) into google

What kind of price range would he be in, as compared to someone like Douglas ?

I understand he is excellent

Basically his barrel shipped to you is about 350 Canadian loonies.

He isn't trying to price compete, he is trying to make the best barrel he can.... and doing a very good job at that.

Ted Gaillard, Ron Smith, Mick McPhee (30 cal only) and Rob McLennan.

McPhee and Smith cut rifle their barrels, I believe the other two button rifle theirs.

Un-highjacking in progress ... Do any of them make a barrel that I could put on an M14?

No, these guys made conventional cylindrical or sporter weight tapered barrels. (Correct me if I'm wrong ....) With a large enough starting dimension, a steady hand with a lathe could turn down the outside, but there are risks in doing that.

My experience has been with Gaillard barrels. He makes only stainless steel Match grade button rifled hand lapped barrel blanks in various contours up to 1.25" x 32 inches long if required.

All four of the barrel-makers mentioned (McLennan, Gaillard, Smith and McPhee) make world-class, benchrest-grade, hand-lapped barrels using the finest steels. Period. They are comparable to Krieger, Lilja, Shilen, etc. -- the finest U.S. custom barrel-makers.

Just a personal opinion, but I'd rather support local craftsmen whenever possible in order to keep our sport (and the necessary infrastructure) alive in this country. The prices these Canadian makers charge for their barrels are actually less than you'd pay for a comparable U.S. barrel after exchange and import hoopla.

now do they actually rifle the barrels, or do they by blanks and cut them?

Barrel makers make the barrel from a solid piece of steel. That's why they are barrel MAKERS.

Gunsmiths and other customers by rifled blanks from barrel makers.

I have several of Ted Gaillard's barrels and like them very much.
I have heard many good words about Ron Smith's barrels and I don't think that he laps his new barrels.
Ron has done a fine job of reboring and rechambering several of my rifles.
Good Luck
John

ive had opertunity to try lots off bbls from RKS, and i havent had a bad one yet. i have also had opertunity to watch/ help do some, and when he is done, they are like a mirror inside.
by the way, gallard was a student of RKS.

Ron Smith is also highly regarded for his GAIN TWIST barrels that are very cool and a must try. His name comes up anywhere in north america when gain twist is mentioned.
