canadian barrel makers

The Canadian barrel makers that we have known for years are slowly aging and slowly closing shop.

I can say and know that Ted and Rob made wonderful barrels. I am not 100 positive but am pretty sure that they came to be because of there love of Short Range BenchRest.

From what I have heard Ted has had a few ailments over the last while. In regards to Rob, I have heard rumors. Not my place to say.

What we need is someone who has a bankroll and some machining knowledge, especially attention to detail to maybe make these guys offers. Offers to learn and buy the ships lock stock and barrel. If I had the cash flow and some knowledge it would be something different.

If I had the cash, I could make the space to stick some drilling and rifling machines in. Unfortunately, I need to work to have the money and if I'm working, I won't have the time so the equipment would sit.

On a side note, I recently found out that Bob Jury now only makes stainless barrels. Didn't probe into it too much, but he told me himself that's all he's making.

416 machines a lot better and generally has more demand, so messing with 4140-4150 is not worth the headaches for many.

Jury barrels in red deer. He uses the same cut rifling process as Krieger barrels does. Very good quality from what I've seen.
And last time I messaged him there was a 2 month wait.
And he doesn't do prefits. Need a smith to team the chamber.

well 30 years of results versus? what 3 or 4. How about resale value. When people start getting good results in Benchrest and F class then maybe he will become the Canadian Kreiger. Results mean something, I am not a fan boy or a shill for anyone.

Guys you have to be realistic here. It takes years to get a reputation. Just because you buy a barrel from someone and you have had decent luck makes it a great barrel? Or that he is a great barrel maker? It depends what you want out of your rifle.

When ringing out Short Range BR accuracy many do not stray from what is at the top. You are going to go with what is at the top. BR shooters follow a tight knit circle on ideas and what does and does not work. More barrels are tossed by the way side than are actually used. Unfortunately for me I do not have the bank roll to do that.

One can argue all they want about barrels and everyone will have there own opinions.

Just for your information Ron Smith has been making barrels since 1965..... uses the single point cut rifling method........
some of the interesting things he will do, gain twist, straight twist, contours, fits and chambers, does both stainless an Chrome moly, makes 22 RF liners, re-bores and re-chambers your original if desired.
He's a handy kind of guy.
#403-631-2405 if you call him take note Ron is pretty hard of hearing so you must speak slowly an clearly......

Another vote for JC in Bouctouche NB. Super guy to deal with. I went to his place and he spent most of the afternoon showing me his machines and what he does to get the best accuracy possible.
