Canadian Military Destroying Browning Pistols

the news said eleven thousands are in inventory, they didnt say how many are new or used.

these pistols imho are reliable enough to give to second line defense. its gonna be a long war. future supplies are never guaranteed.

Wars aren't won with pistols son.

We have donated enough broken garbage to the ukranians already. Making them sift through rubbish to find something passably serviceable isnt an additional burden that the ukranians need right now.

To be clear, every single item we have sent to the ukranians has been garbage. Everything from moth eaten sleeping bags to shot out howitzers, to those rolling coffins known as Bisons. All garbage all well beyond its service life. All of no residual value to the canadian taxpayer.

And the only reaosn why we are giving it away is because flying it to ukraine is cheaper than disposing of it properly. Being able to claim it at full value on the international ledger of charitable donations is a bonus.

By all reasonable accounts russian soldiers have thrown away more serviceable pistols than the CAF would even have available to donate, so this would just be more political talking points for the anti gin liberal government that helps literally no one. Except maybe the Russians.

How do you know our Howitzers were shot out and our sleeping bags moth eaten? Why do you refer to our Bisons as rolling coffins? Curious because it differs from my experience, thats all....

Sleeping bags: Probably not moth eaten. There was such a shortage of sleeping bags a few years ago that there was a mass account verification and recall order put out for sleeping bags (and ruck sacks) for anyone who wasn't in an operational unit. So there wouldn't have been a huge supply stored to even be eaten. Rather, it would have been a huge effort to get those recalled to undergo cleaning and redistribution. Ironically, this is after an effort was made to donate sleeping bags to Ukrainian forces ~2014.

Bisons: In the context of MBTs being shot at with Anti-Armour systems like NLAWS and Javelins, Bisons, like other light armour platforms are susceptible. Doesn't matter if we are talking LAV 6, Bison, M113, etc that are all being donated... but arguably better than POMVs and soft skinned vehicles that Ukrainians are using to shuttle pers around in.

Howitzers (M777): It is well known that the M777 has a problematic/weak breech block. Overall, it has been a very useful light weight, 'heavy' (155mm) towed arty weapon but it is for that very reason, concerning. Where Russian/Soviet/Former East Block doctrine is very much focused on centralised artillery fires and counter-fires, an (armoured) self-propelled artillery system might be more suitable, where towed systems require prime movers and capacity to quickly to move relocate support (projectiles, etc) can be a liability against counter-fires that can strike you within minutes.

Well said. Thank you. I suspect some who have never served using said equipment take strange delight in degrading it...

Really. I don't know how to break your bubble gently aside from just telling you that the Ukrainian conflict will not turn on our junk, long outdated, P35 rattle traps.

Pistols started one hell of a big one though haha
If I remember right, Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassin used an FN M1910

Point taken. However, the nuanced reality was the unquenchable thirst of the Austro-Hungarian nobility to punish Serbia for the incident. It was in fact politic, that caused WW1, not a .30 caliber bullet.

Lol, these pistols are so clapped out from what I’ve heard that melting them down is doing everyone a favour.

For some, they certainly have personal, historical, or perhaps some other intrinsic value. They are a piece of history. Many military and regimental museums may want them, as well as many current or past serving members, or other militaria enthusiasts may want one. They do have some value as a piece of Canadian Military History, and for that, in my opinion, they should be sold or auctioned, as is, to the public providing both a cost recovery to the tax payer for whatever residual value there may be, and allowing Canadians to access and preserve a piece of our history.

Melting firearms in my mind is no different than burning books. It is a waste of tax-payers resources and an attack upon the individuals across Canada who celebrate and cherish firearms as a piece of cultural property.

In my opinion, they have no value as a fleet of functional service firearms to be relied upon by soldiers as a means of defending the lives of themselves, fellow soldiers, or members of general public, and should not be shipped to Ukraine or any other country who thinks they might 'need' them.

What was left to save. These pistols have been in service, what, 80 years. Ever see what passes for trucks in our military? Most are older than 50% of the members here, clapped out antiques. These pistols have seen 5 used to make 4 usable, for decades. Thousands of hands, thousands of rounds, members holding the same pistol their great grandfather used.
That's the real issue.

Five years ago a guy I know said he turned in his rough pistol and was handed a new condition, never issued one.
So there are new ones left for sure.

Thats interesting. according to LCMM for the pistols the last brownings were pulled out of War Stock at the beginning of the Afghan war, and for at least 10 years our L2 maintenance shop has advised us that if we BLR a pistol they will just reduce our entitlement by one because there are no replacements to be had anywhere in the supply chain. We've also been advised anything we turn in will immediately be cannibalized for spares.

Trudeau just burned over a billion dollars on this last tour.

What has he ever built?

Just destroys things you and I would pay to have.

And destroys our country and childrens futures.

You still think so many Canadians voted for him?

I do not.

No he's in a minority government being propped up by the NDP. It's not about how many Canadians voted for him, it's about how many Canadians didn't vote for the Conservative Party. Trudeau initially said that he'd do away with the first past the post system we have. He campaigned on it. Then the little moron came to understand that's how he's able to make a government and back peddled his little sock covered azz making someH:S: excuse as to why he has gotten around to doing what he said he would.

Let's face it, the Conservatives have to put forward a leader that the average Canadian worker trusts and that small business will also support. A Unicorn.
