Canadian Rangers new Rifle

Dust the old Longbranch tooling off. Set it up. Tweak the process so it's a 308 barrel and mag, and a more modern sporter stock.

Build the first 10,000 for the rangers.

Build the next 100,000 for a civilian defence project.

Build another 100,000 for civilian/international sales.

Likely with the civilian sales you could break even, or perhaps make some money on the project.

Allowing civilians to purchase military arms!!! What will the lefties say???

RRCo. Thanks for the links, I am so far behind I think I am coming in first.

I have read that the reason that they are changing rifles is the original Enfield"s are starting to run out and the ammunition supply in also short if you can believe that.
It would be nice to know the real reason.

If they want to find the rifles they can find them, much more cheaply than they can build them. Same with the parts.

Some Rangers think their rifles are too old or too heavy or too inaccurate...same old same old.

An upgrade program has been discussed before, ad nauseam.

Ammo? Did the machinery wear out all of a sudden?

"The real reason"? Decades of gainful employment at NDHQ have been derived from this question. If it is resolved, what will the next project for those people be? I predict this issue will be resolved when something else comes along to maintain their "workload" in place of the Ranger's rifles. That's how Ottawa "works", or doesn't.

Rangers

Although I applaud the idea of a CDN manufactured gun........a 556 selective fire carbine for patrolling the north?? Uhm...more likley to need to defend against your place in the food chain up there rather than 2 legged predators......the full auto burst will simply annoy the bear...then the last few frantic singly squeezed shots could be reserved for suicide! lol

If I was a current Ranger I would be pretty damn happy to see Springfield SOCOM's when the crates got popped open.

Detachable steel mags/short/ fast handling/milspec iron peep sites/pic rail/etc

Yeah, I'd be REAL happy.

If it had to be a bolt gun, a controlled rd feed feature would feel pretty damn kewl when you can smell PB breath!!! lol

I believe I stated the weakness of the C-8, that being bear defense and a need for a SA lower, and with regards to SOCOMs showing up anytime soon, I wouldn't hold my breath on that, if they did however, ....well guess what, ... where do I sign up for dem Rangers!:D

The word on the street in my neck of the woods is that new manufactured Lee Enfields would be too expensive to produce given man-hour/machining requirements, much the same story as why mausers and various other designs "aint like they used to be" and have been modified to reduce manufacturing costs. My guess would be that the M14 would be in the same boat, unless they want them made in China! :) Besides, a FAL is more Canadian military style anyways.

Lets get back to basics...

Let's consider that this rifle should be sufficient to serve as the primary and possibly only firearm possessed by a Ranger.

In that case, it has to be easily and cheaply fed, outside of duty activities. 308 caliber is a good start. Northern store stocks that. Better be mass produced, so any gun store in the South can send replacement parts by Canada Post real quick and real cheap.

In terms of performance, it needs to drop caribou at 100 yds, and bear at 50 yds. Men at 200 to 300 yds, I guess.

It should have available a 5rd mag for hunting, hi-cap for business.

Whatever. Provide these guys a good piece of equipment, that meets their needs, and do it soon.

Think the Ruger Gunsite is tough enough? They are having trouble with the polymer mags (which probably wouldn't work to good in the really cold north) If your using the AI mags you can not top up the magazine in the rifle.

the plastic triggerguard/magwell/mag release is what killed that rifle for me.
that, and why on earth doesnt Ruger make all of their stainless rifles Target Grey?

i absolutely loathe bright shiny stainless. this isnt silverware, FFS.

Frankly the Ruger Scout would be a good choice IMHO, seeing that the SARs use them in .30/06, with a modified folding stock. I would sooner see something like that rather than a 700 clone, but it appears the 700 is the committee's choice. I suppose if they're put together properly, the choice of action is less important than the workmanship and components that make up the whole.

Definitely, now that the Long Gun Registry is toast, the next step would be to derestrict the AR-platform. Why? To aid national defence. That way you can then arm the latest AR-rifle.

1 - It's made by Colt. The Gov't wants the rifle to be made by Colt Canada, so this makes it easy.

2 - It's 308. This also makes it easy.

The Colt LE901-16S

All the gov't needs to do, and equiping the Rangers with this would be reason to do it, would be de-restrict the AR-platform, and also get rid of the mag limit restriction.

It's a Win-Win-Win.

At what point will folks come to the realization that the Rangers don't need a high-cap semi-auto to fulfill their mission???

Who ever said they can only get what they need. Perhaps we should get them with something they want.

Besides, the spin-off benefits of equiping them with an AR would be great.

PS: High-cap is only determined by the mag size. If that really boils your blood, give them 5 round mags. 5 less than the LE they have now.
