I've got a quick question about fine shotgun gunsmiths in Canada.

has anyone used MATTI Fine Arms or Precision Arms & Gunsmithing for annual O/U maintenance or stock refinishing?
what do you think of them?

Is there a shotgun specialist in Canada you use to get your gun serviced, or have stock refinishing done? What are the approximate prices?

Thanks for your opinions/responses in advance.

I should clarify, I'm talking about high gloss refinishing and checkering on Walnut stocked over/under competition trap guns.

Though i'll definitely check out TacOrd for my rifle work.

Good to know, do you know offhand what he would charge to refinish a shotgun stock and foreend?

Precision Arms:

You're from Toronto, pack up your gun & take a drive up the 400 to King City ... actually King Road, north side, white building just east of Jane St.
Knock on the door & say "Hi" to Lisa. She'll dig Steve out of the back and go from their. Excellent stock work, finishing & checkering. And yes. you will likely
have a bit of a wait as he is terminally busy.

Steve can be a little "crusty" ... but then again, what wanker isn't !

Select few professionals in the GTA and outlying areas who could deliver work on doubles guns.......it would help to bear in mind the individuals are much sought after due to the quality of their work and therefore, usually have a long lineup of clients waiting ahead.....

As already recommended, Precision Arms - needed to have chokes opened up on a SxS.....took 10 months!! :) Perhaps he had a greater backlog of work at the time.

Les Paul (Oshawa) - had a Beretta SxS (damaged) stock refinished a while back.....excellent work. Took aprox 6 months to deliver.

Nick Mackinson (Komoka) - had a SxS fore end refashioned from beavertail to splinter....excellent work.

SC Gunworks (Markham) - have seen their work.....very impressive.

Can't say off hand, give him a call and he'll be able to give you a ball park quote, he'll have to see the stock condition to say exactly. Beretta Boy is very correct and "Crusty" is a good word for him, but once you get to know him he's one of the best.

Don't know the accuracy of this but I recently heard Les Paul had retired.

Have used both SC Gunworks and Nick Mackison. All my work has been older SxS. Both excellent. Don't be in a hurry.

This is true. He's cleaning up his backlog, then planning on retiring. He still has a couple of my guns that I've been waiting a few years on. Hope he gets to them before he kicks the bucket.

I wouldn't recommend Les at all. Like 9.3Mauser, Les still has one of mine. You or him might die of old age before you get it back.

Is taking months / years for basic gunsmithing a Canadian thing? I never had this problem when I lived in the US or Europe. Here I have waited 3 months just to have a trigger spring replaced.

I'm not sure on waiting time for basic gunsmithing but the OP is asking about shotgun specialists, not your general gunsmith (or someone who thinks he is a gunsmith). Waiting periods for specialty work is typically long if the guy is any good. I have heard of several people in the US who have waited 2 or 3 years or longer to get a shotgun back from a double gun specialist.
