The barrel is not threaded , the flash eliminator is held in place with a castle nut and splines cut in the barrel.....same as regular length m-14,s .

unless of course, the barrel is threaded

Sorry , I should have explained myself better to the OP... I was referring to when the original barrel is cut and threaded for a muzzle brake or after market flash eliminator . I tried (poorly mind you lol) to explain to the OP how a factory flash eliminator is held on .... I realize the castle nut section is threaded ;)

so.... Is the barrel threaded? Can I install an aftermarket muzzle brake or am I stuck with the factory style?

You can install a Springfield Armory brake very easily.

Brownells sells them , I have one on a rifle already and like it.

In the pic you can see one of the splines which are the same as the original flashhider has .

Any muzzle device designed for the M14 that uses a castlenut to retain it to the barrel, should fit any chinese barrel that has the standard splineways and castlenut thread. You simply re-use your chinese castlenut.
FLASH HIDERS made for the M14/M1A are not legally allowed to be exported from the US. However MUZZLE BRAKES are permitted for export as long as manufacturer and retailer have valid US export liscencing.
By all indications , the shorties currently discussed in this thread being sold by Canada Ammo are no different at the muzzle end than any other standard 22" chinese M14 barrel, the barrels are just shorter.

Great Work Chris, we've been eagerly anticipating factory shorties. Cutting and crowning to get that "Squad Rifle" configuration is such a pain in the ass. With these rifles and the "factory" short barrels that are in the works by some other Canadian outfits(don't ask, I can't tell), the days of chopping and mucking about with front sights options are coming to an end.
