Can't decide wether you want an optic geared more for ranged or CQB? Why not both?...

I got sidetracked the other night while I was looking up other things and came across this:

Oh neat... use the ACOG or whatever magnified optic for longer work and then just tilt your rifle a bit for some ###y CQB action. Unlike a docter optic or something, you can presumably maintain a nice cheekweld, and it looks like a blazing quick transition...

Oh and here's a similar setup from another company... hey its a combo aimpoint/flashlight mount called the MURLM...

There seems to be another pictu-..........

That has to be the most tacticlol pic *ever*.

I don't really see the point. I use my Acog for close in stuff as well as farther out. It works both ways. Maybe not quite as fast as my Eotech but respectable.

Looks like a neat idea.

But I find it funny this picture is Tactical night vision corporation, but he has a tinted visor :p

Looks to me like a paintball mask.

Empire E-Vents to be specific.

Can't say what purpose they would serve him though...

Up close the ACOG isn't as fast as the Eotech or Aimpoint but it's pretty close and there is no comparison of the ACOG to the Eotech of Aimpoint beyond 25 M.

What sort of shooting are you doing?
If you are shooting service rifle, you will need a sight that works from 500m down. If you are only going to shoot CQB, its 100m in.
There are sights that work well for both. The fewer gimmicks, or ingenious solutions to non-existant problems, the better.
FWIW, I just put a Falcon 1.5-5 on my AR. I suspect it will do just fine, at all ranges.

I love my aimpoint and for up to 100 yrds, it is no problem. Beyond that I can hit paper at best, not necessarily the target. As I am almost exclusively a range guy, I am starting to wish I had some magnification. I really wanted an ACOG but didn't want to spend the money.

Just tow days ago, I popped off my aimpoint and put a Leupold scope on my black rifle just so I can practice a little further out and see what my rifle is capable of. If money were not an issue and I had to do it all over again, I would probably go ACOG.

Personally, I'd spend a little extra and get the S&B short dot. It'll also help cut down on weight while achieving the same goals as this setup.

x2. With an AR with a respectable barrel length the short dot seems like the best of both worlds for most users needs. Too bad it costs more than most AR's out there. IOR, Horus, and Falcon have similar models, though the short dot is supposed to be the cats A$$. I wish someone would post pics of it at full magnification and at 1x......Kevin B??????

Your Aimpoint is good out to several hundred meters. Its a 2MOA or 4MOA dot, so unless your brightness is turned too far up, you should be able to see your target. Apply the principles of marksmanship and you will have no problem hitting things with it.

IDing the target at that range is another matter altogether and where the Short Dot comes into it's own...

Check with Peter Dobson and Hirsch Precision for the IOR 1-4X26mm with CQB reticle. Basically this has a 'horseshoe' surrounding a precision dot with a BDC line with hash marks similar to the ACOG.

Trijicon recently made the TA31H which copies this reticle.

Hmmm I was sold on the short dot and as usual I have been searching too hard....I read on an HK416 forum that a lot of guys think the Short Dot lacks durability. One guys said that his outfit fielded over 120 units and a LOT had failures, especially with elevation repeatability. I know you and Kevin B are sold on them...just wondering if this is common with the S&B...

problem with the Dr Optic - is two different cheekwelds - and different muscle memory -- under stress your screwed.
Why Delta and FBI HRT who intiated the Dr Optic on the TA01NSN ACOG went to the Short Dot.

99% of people are better suited with an Aimpoint and a x3 magnifier avaialble to be added.

The USMC MARSOC Det 1 had some problems with a batch of gen1 Short Dot's - it was a QC problem specific to a short run
