Can't decide between .500 Jeffery and .505 Gibbs for moose

You're way undergunned for anything except a scrawny, underweight, young moose with a .500 class rifle caliber. Today's heavily armoured, high speed capable moose require nothing less than a .900 Nitro Express, loaded hot! You may want to consider a muzzle brake, they have a teensy bit of recoil.
Hope this helps! ROLMAO! :p

Some guys are finding even the .900 NE a bit weak for the new heavily armoured modern moose. They're trying to source out shoulder launched arms firing a rocket propelled round with an armour piercing depleted uranium projectile...if you find out they're on dealer's shelves please let us know. :p

The video Whourgoul posted was shot by me, the gun belongs to my friend and hunting partner. This coming up season we are going to bark birds with the 505 :)
What 525 grainer's are to light for partridge ,HA!

You know, this started as a sensible thread with a question of cartridge selection for moose, but you guys have just turned it into a farse..............500 J or 505 G.........that's a sensible question. My preference is the Gibs for sure, easier case to work with and less feeding issues without the rebated rim, they work well in a push feed though.

Any idea what percentage of threads on this forum go that direction? It doesn't seem at all unusual to me.

I didn't for a minute think it was anything other than a fun thread.

Having enjoyed lunch with him, and dinner with his family in his home, I can state quite unequivocally that 1899 is a very knowledgeable hunter and firearms enthusiast, who would not need to ask the question at all.

Besides, we all know that a 9.3 is enough gun anyway! ;)

Geez buddy, if a .243 Win with bonded or mono-metal bullets takes down a moose no problem at reasonable ranges, then of course we're going to have a bit of fun when someone asks if a .500 class round is going to be fine for moose hunting. OF COURSE...and elephant, water buffalo, anything on Earth!
Don't get constipated, enjoy a smile now and then! :-D

I'm pretty sure that Doug knew that... as did everyone else.

Thank goodness Ted! I was just sitting back and thinking about the ".270 Win vs. .280 Rem", ".308 vs .30-06" types of threads and just threw this out there for fun. My "heavy" at the moment is a .30-06 with 220gr Partitions - and I know that it will do just about anything needed in North America. That is not saying I won't eventually get something bigger....for fun!

Nice write up in Sports Afield this month about a custom rifle that Phil Shoemaker had built for him. It's a 30-06 and he carries it on bear hunts. Anecdote in the story about following up a wounded bear that came for him while he was carrying that rifle loaded with 220gr NPTs. He delivered 6 shots to the bear with that rifle with the 6th being the final "coup de grace" shot. The bear was shown in the article as well. It was a slobberknocker. That's enough recommendation for me.

And Phil has a 505 Gibbs as well.
