Can't understand 1911

The only really dated and weak link in the 1911 is the barrel link...everything else is solid.
Is there something inferior about an all steel pistol that will literally last forever with the odd wipe down with oil?
It's not the best carry or combat pistol these days, no argument there. Still sitting in the winners circles in IPSC in the form of SVI/STI here anyway. CZ and Tanfoglio haven't quite surpassed it yet. Don't forget that CZ and Tang actually make their race guns MORE like the "outdated" 1911 and remove the firing pin safety design to try and get as good of a trigger as the 100 year old pistol

My collection only own 3 for now, but hopefully in 2 or 3 years, i hope to have one of each top tier ones ( maybe 20 all together ), they are so easy to collect... JP.

I'm talking about the mechanism of the trigger ffs. How many times do I have to say this in my posts?

Anyone with any knowledge of how the two guns operate and are designed, will state that yes, they are two completely different trigger mechanisms. With that understood, you can't compare them to each other.

I'm not talking about the action of the guns, I'm talking about the damn trigger mechanism FFS!

Both triggers operate in single action. True the HP pivots, and the 1911 slides, but that's not what you said in your OP.....And the trigger mechanisms internally other then that point aren't all that different, it's just harder to work around the double stack mag in the HP.

I like both, but find the HP points better and is far more comfortable to carry. It is easier to be accurate with a 1911...it's like shooting with training wheels ;)

I don't think you would call a 1911 guy a "poser" to his face.

Don't you think that we have ALL tried multiple pistols before settling in with the one that we like the best?

And it's not even nostalgia. There's class, soul, and pride of ownership, even in a cheap one. My Glocks don't give me any of those. They are hammers, and for myself shooting is about more than simply pounding nails. It is an immersive experience in all aspects.

The same can be said of those who enjoy classic patterned revolvers, or are single action aficionados, or lovers of old pattern Smiths all posers and folks lost to nostalgia too?

The only reason that the 1911 has a grip safety is that the US Army insisted on it. Wasn't JMB's first choice.

The 1911 is still viable. Look at the Marine's new pistol. I know they aren't issuing it to everyone, but according to many, it is still worth a look. I tend to agree. It isn't for the limp wristed folks who need a lightweight plastic gun, but it can still be seen in holsters of the informed.

My first time shooting, i was fortunate to be able to try several different styles of pistol. I fell in love with the 1911 from the bery first day.

did you dig him up first before calling him out? lol

My comment was intended as sarcasm. Anyone who calls a 1911 owner a "poser" is, in effect, calling the father of modern pistolcraft a one as well.

While there may be better choices for self-defence today, the 1911 is the auto-pistol basis upon which most modern techniques of shooting were developed. (Check out "A Rifleman Goes to War" to read about the first speed-reload... circa 1916.) Almost all of what we use today is an improvement on what Cooper developed initially. In his time a custom 1911 was the best tool for the job.

Many of us choose to shoot a 1911 partly out of a sense of nostalgia, but also because it's a damn fine arm that has stood the test of time. Accurate, reliable, customizable, and historic. Is it perfect? No. But keep in mind that the last saber issued to the US Army cavalry was a model 1913... 2 years after the 1911 was issued.

Will Glock or M&P inspire shooters the same way in a hundred years? Maybe...

The 1911 design is brilliant mechanically (John Browning was god damned genius) for it's time and place, it's simple, reliable and durable.
I like the 1911 for what it is. A sturdy handgun that fires a big, fat, retarded-slow moving bullet. However it's by far not my personal favorite handgun. I've shot and tried quite a few hand guns now. Eveyone has their own preferences. I try and base mine on realistic expectations though and I've finally settlled with the Makarov as my favorite (now the only hand gun I own currently).
The reason I think the 1911 is so popular is because 1) It's an American icon 2) it's in every video game and movie ever made making it the "AK-47" of the handgun world to people outside of the gun community 3) because of reason 2 and 3 there is more biased myth and lore surrounding it than it's actual characteristics. It's held in popular mass opinion as a MANS gun, big giant stopping power .45 ACP made in America slaying Communists and Terrorists for 100 years +!!!!!!(!!!) If you don't like it, it's because your tiny fruity hands are just too small and you need to get a ##### enlargement! etc etc Not to mention the large amount of people who put stopping power ahead of shot placement but that's a whole other biased emotional touchy internet commando debate......
Personally the reason I don't own one or even prefer them is because they are extremely beefy, oversized and heavy. Extremely unwieldy. They are single action. Too many safeties. The ammunition is expensive as hell. The guns themeselves are overpriced and expensive as hell.
It took me a while to see through the slanted smoke screen of reasons 1 to 3 though. Hell I may even pick one up some day down the road for s**ts and giggles but for me there are many other better alternatives.

I'd buy a makarov if it didn't mean reloading yet another blasted cartridge...

That big retarded-slow (that gave me a laugh ;) ) bullet is fun, though. Still, I'm liking the 9mm more these days.

But the Mak fires a small, light, puny slow moving bullet....that's somehow superior to a fat heavy slow moving bullet? The .45 will fire a bullet twice the weight of the 90gr Mak at the same velocity....

Says the guy that prefers the Mak over the 1911 lol

Cant understand why anyone would want a 1911 in any caliber than 45 ACP... Just saying. JP.

My view at first too, when I thought that I wanted only *1* 1911!

But variety....mmmmmm...spicy ;)

That being said I have no interest in 40S&W or anything that houses it, nor really in anything heavier than .45 - I don't load up .45auto to the max either, or it becomes less fun.

38super is nothing to a plinker that 9mm isn't, 10mm means you're chasing after exotic brass as much as you shoot, and for .22 there are better pistols.

So I guess that for me, 2 chamberings is all the variety I can handle!

I never said it was superior. That's an empty statement regardless. Superior to what? In what application? It's a pointless, groundless debate.

That is but one small facet of my reasons for preferring the Makarov over the 1911 as stated. I don't hate the 1911 but it's nowhere near my prefered handgun. It's not an attack on your personal preferences so calm down your ego.
