Can't understand 1911

I know. I'm not really into boutique guns myself. It was just a daydream. I've a GP100 myself and it's a nice gun. I'm mostly shooting 38 in it though.

Besides aren't we told that .357 sig is the solution for 357 magnum in a pistol?

I'm very tempted to track down a .357sig 1911 barrel for my SAM Omega .40.
Just sucks all kinds of ass loading bottleneck pistol rounds though....

Still waiting for her to come in, but this is what she looks like...

That is beautiful, may I ask what model that is? And were you got it and how much? I have a S&W PD Commander that Im really impressed with, I have heard nothing but good things about S&W 1911's.

I think irunguns.ca had that s&w 1911a1pc for just over 1500

Yes, indeed it is from IRG. It is the S&W 1911 Performance Center version. There is also a commander length version with a scandium frame which feels as light a polymer pistol. I stocked up on ammo today in anticipation of the pistol arriving soon. :)

They are fun to shoot as well, Ive got a WW1 1913 Colt 1911. Its a timeless classic.
Some say stopping power... maybe 30 years ago, but not now. You can get ammo of all types now for all calibers that come close if not supersede the .45, such as 9mm hollows, and those new expanding "banana peel" bullets. They look painful.

What? No love for JMB's other achievement, the Browning Hi Power? Fewer moving parts, more armies equipped and also cloned by just about every Eastern nation.:d

Yes the Hi Power is technically better, simpler more reliable blah blah but it does not have the soul of the 1911 and in my view is not as well proportioned nor does it shoot as naturally. Not saying it is a bad gun just that I prefer the 1911.

Not quite sure why the 1911 issue always seems to descend into a P---ing match Here are my thoughts.

I own a Sig 226 in 9mm, Ruger 1911 in 45ACP, CZ TS in 40S&W and a couple of Ruger Vaqueros.

For combat the Sig226 would be my preference it is just so reliable, quick and easy to strip and clean and it works no matter what. Shoots well especially in a combat sense. If I was after a 45ACP combat weapon I would probably go with a Sig 220.

The CZ TS is incredibly accurate and a superb rapid fire target weapon but it is big, heavy and the trigger is too light for general use.

The 1911 is harder to strip and clean, is generally more fussy than either of the other two guns but now it is broken in it is pretty damn reliable but I would not trust it in the same conditions as a Sig226 or 220. But and a big but it is the gun I LIKE the most. It fits me like it was custom made for me, points and shoot well and somehow it just looks right. A lot of modern guns are better in a technical sense but to me the 1911 is just right to shoot. I used the Hi Power in my military days. Excellent gun but I like the 1911 more. Dis the 1911 as much as you want but there are a lot of us out there who really like 1911's. As a range gun the fussiness and more difficult cleaning are not really an issue. I would really love a Wilson or Nighthawk etc.

I suspect that because they were used by the US armed forces for so long that vets wanted something that they had trained on and were familiar with. Plus all the wanna-be's wanted whatever the GI's were using. I suspect that if the US forces had adopted the Hi Power in 1935, the 1911 would be a footnote in pistol history and the Hi Power seen as JMB's crowning glory.

Wrong on all counts.

My first time shooting, i was fortunate to be able to try several different styles of pistol. I fell in love with the 1911 from the bery first day.

I did the first time I looked at one. I wasn't wrong.

The 1911 has everything going for it, a decently powerful cartridge (.45 ACP), ergonomics, easily stripped and it has withstood the test of time.

Of all the guns I REALLY like the 1911 is my favorite followed by the 1851 Navy.

The list is long...

Just poking fun back....none of these loose debates are ever personal.
If I could carry, I dunno....maybe one of the smaller glocks in 9mm. They won me over with needing next to no cleaning or maintenance, virtually rust proof, high capacity, bullet proof simple design.
Definitely ugly though...but I can't deny the reliability and durability of the design.

The only bytch about Glocks is you have to hold them sideways...

Plus, they really are so damn ugly.

Heh! ;)

Nice. Does it run without problems?

I've not had the nerve to shoot it yet... Sounds daft, and I know I'll be long gone before it's considered collectable, but there you go...

I take out my R1 when I want some of that GI goodness

I'll get this one dirty one day. Just not today.

I have and shoot the 100 Anniversary 1911 which is modeled after the 1918 production gun. the only problem so far is with the last round not clearing the breach.
I shoot better with my SAM Commander-E which has way better sights.
My other 1911 was made in 1917 and has been "upgraded" with adjustable sights, this is a fantastic shooter.

I recently acquired an R1 as well, very nice gun for the money.

It is - I like the finish in particular. My trigger is creepy, but predictable and it shoots very well.

I have my eye on the Springfield stainless GI at Wanstalls, but I can't buy anything else right now.

I'm one of the nearly no ones - lol

Love spur hammers, the arched MSH works for me (original design was flat btw) and the GI grip safety IMO is superior for shooting the thing one handed. Beaver tails benefit combat grips.

Shooting one handed was the technique taught in the military in the early days hence the design was appropriate for the times. The changes were made due to changes in shooting styles and bullets. Don't see too many reliability problems when shooting military ball through an old style 1911.

Well, it was a gun designed for the US Cavalry, after all ;)

But the chunky old thing feels so much better in one hand than it has any right to.

I don't hate on the new styles or the race guns - I just prefer the traditional aesthetic and am glad that it also happens to work excellently for me.

Those same race guns fly in the face of any plastic purchaser who writes the 1911 off as an obsolete 100 year old design.

Somehow it manages to stay current and relevant, and not wholly because of nostalgic farts like me. Obviously and empirically it simply must Just Work for the jobs being demanded of it.

1911 is a timeless design that is modern, yet possess an aura of nostalgia. Hard to find a better gun that feels better in the hand save for a CZ75 perhaps. Every pistol collection should have a 1911 even if only for conversation's sake.
