Carcano shooting

I just bought myself an original rifle length version to go with my two carbines. Now my debate is to keep them all or surplus off one of the carbines. Hardly seems worth is to go to the hassle of listing, packing, and shipping a rifle for $250 shipped as I think that's all they'll sell for currently. So I guess I'll try to keep them all even though space in the safe is more limited than I thought when I bought the rifle

remove bolt(keep in safe), put rifle in the rafters, or other out of sight spot. wait for it to go up in value...

I've never handled one of the Carcano carbines - For those of you who have, how do they carry? I was thinking about trying one for deer hunting (not for my primary rifle, just for something different).

They are extremely light and handy.

For deer hunting. The trick is to get a load that works for you and the sights on your example.

Factory ppu will definitely shoot 16" or more high at 100m with factory sights. Not the best choice for hunting unless you install a higher front sight.

I modified the front sight on one of my Carcano carbines (glob on JB Weld, let cure, sand to shape and file down until POA and POI are the same. I have been looking around for a new taller front sight for my full-length Carcano, but I can't seem to find any in stock anywhere. I was told the Swedish Mauser sights work, as well as a generic tall mauser front sight that Numrich newly manufactures, but all seem to be sold out currently. It appears I may be globbing on more JB weld :p

Thanks Claven - There's likely no difference in the quality of the stock at any of these retailers, is there? All from the same batch, not worth sorting through, etc...

Or is anyone offering a hand select option?

All from the same import.

Gng has changed their description to "fair", so I'd say they are down to a few remainders in rougher condition.

The other retailers likely have more stock, they have not had sales yet.

I'm not aware anyone is doing hand select unless you can visit a store in person.

There were a couple available at the Penticton show today that I would rate at 75% overall and were priced around the $400 point.

I didn't check out the bores but the exteriors were showing handling and storage marks.

Milsurps are in the ''get them while you can'' on the commodity list. Snooze and you lose.

They're nice rifles for the most part.

Sometimes, like the Soviet era Mosins and Mausers, the first rifles that were sold off as surplus were in FAIR condition, then as they were replaced in the field by governments, the better quality pieces ranging from GOOD to Very Good showed up. Towards the end of the Golden Age, the New In Wrap firearms were released as surplus.

The more recent surplus units, such as the Swede Mausers were different. They sold off the M94 rifles first, then some M42b types, then released very nice M96 types and last the M38 types.

Surprisingly, they released the rifles they had in stores that had mostly been FTRed before going into long term storage. The last of them were in pretty rough shape in comparison, mostly mismatched or had been issued to civilian marksmanship programs.

The recent offering of surplus Carcanos are supposedly from Italian Police stores. Every single one of them I've seen, has been put away without cleaning. The bores are heavily fouled with carbon and copper.

I was lucky with the one I purchased but some were borderline junk. Luck of the draw I guess.

Any advice on what kind of slings work well on the Carcano carbines with the side sling mounts? Looks like it is 7/8" wide at the attachment points, and needs something fairly thin to thread through.

Why don't you go online and look for a ''reproduction'' sling?? They're about $25.

I believe Sarco Inc and Numrich Gun Parts have surplus slings available. I haven't looked at Marstar.

Bumping this older thread just to keep all the info together. Since it seems we are all stuck with the reproduction clips for these rifles as the original brass ones seem rare and expensive (comparatively at least), does anyone have an easy to follow guide to make them run better?

I have probably 20 of the clips or so and some run great-ish and others run very poorly. I've tried bending/adjusting/etc but can't seem to find the sweet spot. I assume they should be square so I_I is better than /_/ or \_/

Has anyone had any luck "tuning" their clips for more reliable feeding? I've tried searching Google and YouTube for clip-tuning tutorials and have come up empty handed

There were some aftermarket knock offs being sold last year that looked great, but didn't work well or not at all. I had half a dozen and threw them away when new ones were available and worked.

I wish I had done better at keeping mine sorted. I got 8 or so from Marstar when they first brought them out. Then I got 6 or so from (I think?) Great North Gun Co when I bought one of their sale Carcano rifles. Then I received a handful on a deal from the EE with some 6.5 brass. Next time I'm out at the range I need to bring a paint marker or similar to try to sort the good feeders from the poor ones and see if I can notice any visible differences
