Caribou?

I guess you don't care about hunting with ethical outfitters. Mirage outfitters=shooting fish in barel

Now if your idea of a good time is shooting animals from the float of the aircraft than have at her!f:P:

Oh ok. I thought since they are (were) endorsed by some prominent hunting personalities that they would be a good place to start. I have friends that have been using them for the past 5 years and I assure you none of them have shot from the float of the aircraft.

But I will agree with the shooting fish in a barrel comment. I guess you've never been on caribou hunt??

Several caribou hunts under my belt thanks for asking :) I did have the advantage of having a resident hunter tag every season for the last 7 years.

Afterall... what do I know? I'm just the pilot who flies you guys out to camp and back to civilization with big racks in the back of my Beaver/Otter at the end of your hunt.
Do say... How many quarters have you loaded into an airplane and then flown out this year alone TakDriver?

None. After all..what do I know? I'm just the guy that pays the big money so that arrogant "pilots" like you can maintain employment and stay out of the welfare line.

Do say...how many hunters have you allowed or encouraged to shoot off your floats?

Now, now guys, settle down, help the orginal poster find a good Caribou hunt, he doesn't care about your petty arguing..........Pretty good 'eh....and I'm not even from BC!!!

Are you hunting anywhere now Barry or just lurking around YK?
Took some raffle winners to Nunavut this fall, .....donated hunt from last year, ..saw thousands, as usual!!
Otherwise, just raising hell, becoming the media's "star" to quote for the news, and becoming a bigger thorn in ENR's butt. Getting lots of practice in at the range and some stockwork caught up. Just got back from a hunt and then it's Alberta time, (may look into getting back into some outfitting there, ..all my neighbours there want me to, as they recognize the benefits!!). Then after freeze-up it'll be moose and then bison in February. Might spend a bit of time chasing wolves (ENR pays $200 for the carcass and you get to keep the hide, so it could be profitable) and then there's photographing the caribou in "numbers that don't exist".
I'll still be doing lots of booking for other reputable outfitters that won't hurt our reputation, so my plate is still full and I'm keeping too busy.

Resulting to personal attacks? Wow, you must be one stand-up guy to have in camp! All I said was that some outfitters dont play the game fairly. You decide who you want to hunt with. That's your call. I on the otherhand refuse to work for non ethical outfitters, and don't recomend any to anyone either.

None. Been offered good money to allow one of my passengers to do it, and everytime have refused. You see, its not because you have ''big money'' that you can do what you want.

Now, back to the topic at hand, let's try to give the OP the advice he was looking for, I'm tired of getting into #### measuring contests with guys who don't know what their talking about.

I'm trying to convince the wife that we need to go on a caribou hunt. Probably looking at next fall. Only problem is they don't live down where we live, so we'll have to go north! Exciting!

I'm sure some people here have experience with this sort of thing. I'm curious about the price of such an adventure. Being from Sask, I'm assuming we'd pretty much have to go with a guided hunt. Where's the best place for caribou? I'm thinking that the yukon or NWT. Also, the wife would be happy with a big bull moose too.

I know its not going to be cheap, but its going to be a once in a lifetime thing.

Thanks!

Move. You can hunt caribou in Saskatchewan, but only in Zone 76, and you have to live in that zone for at least three months before buying the caribou license.

The caribou season this year started 15OCT and goes 'til 14APR next year. One, either ###, per license. But only for residents of Zone 76 - there is still time to move there and qualify for this season. :)

No, that's not all that you said. In fact, that last comment you made in your previous post to me was arrogant.

And I never said I could do what I want, I was merely stating a fact. If it wasn't for folks spending some big money up there on caribou hunts with outfitters, inexperienced pilots looking to collect their hours (flying time) like yourself, would be standing in the soup lines hoping to get a break. So try to be a little grateful.

And finally, it's a good thing you've given up on #### measuring because I got a feeling you'd come up a bit short in that department. ;)

Good luck out there and try to stay away from the jet fumes..

I have been told that the January caribou hunt in QC is ridiculously cheap, because most of them have lost their antlers at that point.

I was told $600 for a hunt. I don't know if that number was right or not. But it was enough to perk my ears up . . .

True story Coach. Four friends went up last year and total cost per person was just under 700.

Geez, when will the general public (sorry pal, but your comment only serves to prove the ignorance you have of an indusrty you know so little of) realize that not all career pilots choose to fly for the airlines as a retirement plan!!! ;)

For what it's worth (SFA as I'm probably typing to a brick wall) I used to fly for a major airline. Yup, that's right pal, the guy whom might of flown your pals on their last hunt might just have been a semi retired airline guy out to have a little fun during the summer months. So much for the starving, welfare recipient youngster you were thinking of eh?

The irony of it all is that you've obviously no knowledge of the industry or that of it's outfitters. Your getting defensive, and I don't blame you. Either way, enjoy your road hunt. I for one am glad that I don't have to deal with ''pork and bean'' (see: guys that shoot animals while they are swimming) type customers such as yourself.

Best Regards,
Cessna

I hope you find the outfitter your looking for. PM me if you'd like more info on ethical outfitters, I've no axe to grind, other than folks whom have no problems hunting with non-ethical outfitters. My sincerest apologies for the thread hijack it was not my intent. :)

Big Ugly, It's hard when your government wants to stop "consumptive tourism" and has decided that after 30 years I should be catering to "tree huggers" where there are no trees to hug, and that I should be serving organic foods and organic eggs to all clients!!! Also can't get it thrutheir heads that if you turned the unarmed huggers loose, someone would be eaten promptly, ..........we've often had 30 bears in the area!! Hawkins suggested today in the legislature that they should buy us out, ....did that make them squirm!!

First of all, I'm not your pal, butterball. And no one's interested in your "401k". And stop fooling yourself, most folks can see right through your thinly veiled, "dig me I fly" persona.

Secondly, he wasn't. He was an inexperienced pilot who thought he was Buddha. And this fantasy you're having about working for a major airline is on par with our last "major airline pilot'. He could barely handle the Beaver! But when I told him I had my fixed wing just to get my rotary, his eyes bugged out. Not to worry, HE was in good hands. ;)

But it doesn't sound like you're having much fun. In fact, you sound like you're whining abut your job - you're lucky to have one, these days. Like I said before, perhaps you should be a little more grateful and not bite the hand that feeds you.

And finally, that's not an example of irony - look it up if you need to. Sadly, you're sounding a little jealous now. But I'm sorry, I can't continue this - I have better things to do with my time. Perhaps you could make better use of your free time while you're drawing unemployment insurance.

I'll let the folks up north know you're fondly thinking of them..;)

Cheers!
