I've never considered this before as my other firearms have convenient/operable safeties.
My latest acuisition is an East German M38 with a worn out safety. The edge of the reciever where the cocking piece usually catches is worn away and there is a corresponding groove in the back of the cocking piece. The safety will not engage.
On the range the rifle is either loaded and shooting or open/unloaded and flagged so no confusion there...
However I've taken to carring it on gopher shoots and have plans to cart it along when I take my Whitetail this fall so I'm wondering if it's safe to chamber a round and then carry decocked. I don't mind so much missing out on the odd gopher while I work the bolt but I'm gonna be some POed is I miss my buck while I'm fighting with the bolt.
I'm either shooting Hungarian 21/52 (Etalon) or boxer primed hand loads.
Any input appreciated
