Carrying rifle on a snowmobile

I have spent many hours up in the great white north and lots of people carry them slung around their chest. It seems to get protected a little more then on your back.

On chest, arms over the rifle.
I saw a brand new Sako broken in half when slung on the back, and the rider was thrown.
Always use a snow cover.
I preferred to carry a rifle in a case along the running board. Added an additional strap to secure it.

I used the Kolpin Gun Boot, modified the bracket to fit on cargo sides (vertical). If I would do it again I would use the Kolpin 6.0 as it has an angled top that hinges. The standard kolpin must be yanked off, not good if you need it in a hurry.

Sorry, only have low resolution pics, you should get the idea though.

Only had to make some spacers and get longer bolts to fit. Tip rest on running boards.

I have also heard some use a leather scabbard attached to the hood, with butt of rifle ponting backwards and up.

Leather scabbard bolted through the left side, butt by your left hand, of the hood works great if you want to be able to grab it on the go.

I usually have mine in a scabbard on the right side, pointing forward and along the tunnel. Couple soft bungees to keep it tight.

If it's an open case (leather scabbard) you need a scope cover. If it's zippered soft case it might be ok, but snow might get in there.

Sorry, I don't think I have any pictures though

If you tie the case to the toboggan or komatik, don't tie it on the top of the load; on the side. If the thing rolls, the rifle in its case will be protected.

Thanks for all the good suggestions! I'm new to snowmobiles but they do seem to be lacking cargo securing points, I guess this is why boggans are often used.

Is it just me or is a snowmachine needing some reengineering , unlike a quad with front racks back racks ball hitch , you cant carry anything on it

It's you. I hate having a load in front of me. It messes with the handling and visibility. One of the best things about a snowmobile is that you can quickly disengage the sled or komatik and either get out of whatever mess your in or to check an upcoming patch of trail. Plus you can carry a schwack more stuff on a sled than you can on a quad, even with a trailer. A snowmobile is much more like a motorcycle whereas a quad is more like a small truck. Too much load on a sled is like too much load on a bike...sh*team.
