Cartridge feeding.

I'm in no way shape or form promoting CRF actions. Push feeds should feed as well and many of them don't either. But any rifle that feeds properly is a keeper indeed.

One of my best feeding rifles is my cheap (relatively) Zastava stainless 7x64. Feeds empties like they aren't even there. Of course, more importantly, it feeds any round like it isn't there. I always test my rifles for feeding and timing and if it isn't correct, off they go or they get worked on. If it doesn't feed or eject, it's junk. Push or CRF. My rifles are of course all CRF but the only push in the family (my daughters Weatherby Vanguard Girls Hunt2) also feeds slick and reliably.

I have rifles that feed cartridges flawlessly, but have tried playing around with empty cases and found they don't feed well at all. I think the added weight of a loaded cartridge is a contributing factor to the feeding with many rifles.

The lack of weight is really not the issue. It is the air space ahead of the case mouth.

My .375 Ruger Alaskan will feed empty cases.

Mine does too, although I would say about 90% as every now and then one case won't feed.

But This does remind me about something Bill Leeper said about a rifle he had built "it feeds great, it will even feed empty cases! Why anyone wants to feed empty cases Indont know, but some people do, and this tifle does that " :)

If you stick with empty cases, you can carry the rifle "hot" and "in the dark" with a 3-Position safety, a tang safety or NO safety at all... and you might still survive, despite the scary bears...

This is why I love CGN, always something entertaining to read.

A well set up CRF is a pleasure to be around. It's actually pretty easy when you've done a few. I'm far less convinced about feeding empty cases, but like most on this thread fed a few to see. Some did, some didn't and I won't be changing the timing on any because of it. Or even checking any more.

It wasn't a total waste of time though, because it gave a perfect opportunity to practice catching empty cases out of the air. That's just as unimportant, but you can get better mileage out of it easier.

Just so I'm clear ...

If a rifle always functions flawlessly otherwise but sometimes doesn't with an empty case there is real cause for concern ?

Did I get your point correct ?

If your rifle feeds flawlessly with live ammo but not empty cases, there is nothing wrong with your rifle. Feeding an empty case is never going to save your life :)
