Cast Bullet ####

Would you think this method would improve use in a progressive press? That would make it very worthwhile.

A powder coat gun gets you perfect results with extra time and mess. Tumbling is quick and easy, but may not offer the best looking or coverage, but enough to stop leading as long as the driving bands are coated. Either method will be good for progressive loading because you still have to size the bullet to the diameter you want. The lee push through sizers are the best solution for sizing powder coat bullets.

If you meant will it be less messy with normal cast bullet, absolutely. It's basically like using plated or jacketed bullets.

Bought an H&R Buffalo Classic as a cheap entry-level black powder cartridge rifle to play around with. I have a Marlin guide gun in 45-70 as well but don't really want to clean black powder residue out of it.
I ordered up a 405gr .450" straight sided mould from Accurate Molds and used regular 3-hole binder paper to bring the bullets up to .460". I tried some onion-skin tracing paper I have but it only brought the bullets up to .455".
My first loads have 50gr of Goex FFg to test and we'll see where I go from there. 1/8" circle fly .460" over powder wad, scoop of SPG lube, and a bullet. I can almost seat the bullets with my fingers.

Another load I tried (don't have pics) is a .458" round ball over 20gr of FFg. I used 3x 1/2" .460" wads to fill the case to the base of the bullet and put a scoop of SPG under it again. Managed to shoot 6" @ 50yds which is about as good as I can ask for with round balls out of a conventionally rifled barrel.

Such an inspiring thread jethunter, and all who have contributed.
Have learned a lot here!.
Why just today, spent hours over a blazing hot coleman in a heatwave, turning 100 pounds of old dead soft pipe casings into pot-ready ingots.
At 30C ... thats inspired!! lol.

Well, Boys and Girls, the next session of cast 9.3X62 loads and COW will be using a newspaper wad, instead of cotton towel wad.

After shooting more than a hundred Northman 285 gr bullets at over 2200 fps with no leading whatsoever, as posted earlier in this thread, the piece of old towel used for the half inch squares for wad material is completely used up. Was going to cut up another one, then thought about newspaper, to which everyone has access in unlimited amounts.

Cut the paper into 1 1/2" strips, then squares, and found that two of them compact quite nicely on top of the powder charge with a pencil. I compressed them quite hard, same as the cotton wads before adding the COW.

Measured the COW into the cases using a powder measure, and they were ready for the bullets.

You can see there is plenty of compression in the loaded round, so the base of the bullet is well protected.

I am thinking the newsprint should be able to protect the COW as well as the cotton wad did. We will know shortly. Had eleven fired cases, and that will be enough to check both leading and accuracy. The Model 46A was went to a new home a few days ago, so The Ugly 9.3 gets the honours. Will report back after the next visit to the range.

My first cast, .455 webley bullets. Some didn't fill out 100% but they got better as I got going.

Just got back from the range test of the paper wad loads. They did not do as well as the cotton wad loads. Accuracy was okay for the first six rounds, and then began to deteriorate. The group size was almost five inches, and there is some evidence of leading after all eleven rounds were fired.

Will try the again with three squares of newspaper, and report back.

very nice, how long from order to in your hands for his molds?
If you're ordering a mould already in the catalogue that they have the cherry for it's usually shipped within 3-5 business days and then takes 5-7 business days to get to my door. If you are requesting a custom cherry be made their site currently says 2 weeks.

Went to the range tonight with Corythecowboy, who is visiting here. He did the shooting, using the same load, but with three squares, and then four squares, of newsprint for the wad. The bore is leaded up very badly after 20 rounds, and accuracy continued to deteriorate as we shot.

Going to try shooting the same load again with cotton wad and COW, as in the original loads, and see if they will remove the lead. The first time all the leading was gone in five rounds.

Will report back.....

After a year of collecting and processing range scrap, I've cast my first bullets with the help of a friend with proper equipment. Made these yesterday and will lube today and load this week. 200 grain tumble lube .45 bullets, they cast out at 205 grains.

As long as my .454 ant. pistol boolit's have been sized 1-2 thou. over groove dia., and cast not too hard (WW or softer), tumblelube has worked very well.
That said ... revolver cyl. throats have needed opening up to groove dia. to achieve accuracy, and, a firm crimp is always neccessary with the slow 2400 speed propellants I use. This, to safely achieve respectable vels. at BP level pressure curves.
Never even a hint of leading using alox tumblelube with 200 grainers similar to yours, at 800fps.
The seating die stem, it will need a cleaning from time to time with alox though, to maintain consistent seating depth ...
FWIW ...

Heres my first attempt with my new NOE .338 mould.

Still a way to go to get them perfect but happy with them so far. They are dropping at 205 grains and I size them down to .0335" for a 1886 Steyr Kropatscheck in 8 x 60R.

Process for 9mm 124gr.

1. Around 44 bullets, 1 tea spoon of blue powder

2. Around 2 min swirling in food container.

3. Ready to bake.
