Cast Lead in glocks

What are people's experiences using cast lead reloads in Glocks. Im in the process of getting a 17 and want to continue using my cast 9mm rounds in it - but Im reading that's not recommended. Whats the word?
 
Shouldn't shoot lead through a stock Glock barrel. You can shoot lead through an aftermarket barrel though.
 
Lol...I shot tens of thousands of lead rounds through a stock Glock barrel with no ill effects and saw some rentals (Trillium Sports days) that had many more than that with lead bullets with no ill effects.
 
x2 - I know someone who shoots lead through his G17 all the time, and I'm pretty sure there's been thousands of rounds down the pipe and it still works like a champ
 
I usually put around 200 rounds of lead a week down my G17 Gen 3....no problems yet

just have a schedule of regular cleaning and maintenance
 
The official factory position is if you shoot lead bullets through it the warranty is permanently void. Glock says you must use only factory jacketed ammunition or your warranty is void. Glock says you should not fire cast lead bullets in your Glock.

Glock's lawyers say that, they also say no reloads, they also say never holster a loaded firearm :rolleyes:
 
Glock is not the only manufacturer to claim that reloaded ammo (which would include all lead bullet 9mm ammo) voids their warranty. Realistically, this will only be an issue in the event of damage caused by defective reloads.

Go ahead and shoot cast bullet reloads out of you Glock. Just take care that there isn't too much lead buildup in the bore and you'll be fine. Lots of Glocks are used with reloads and lots of those reloads are with cast bullets.
 
Thousands of rounds of cast lead. Almost the only ammo shot in my Glock. I clean just like any other pistol. A bronze brush every second or third time it is shot.

Maybe a bit more lead comes out than with other pistols.
 
I fired well over 10,000 rounds of 145gn lead loaded to the old IPSC Major through a 17L during practice. I saw less leading in the Glock than the STI that replaced it.
 
Good to know, I always avoided shooting lead through my Glock. But I guess it isn't that big of a deal considering I clean it after every couple of range trips anyway.

Yeah, but what does Glock know. They only designed and manufactured the gun. Come on, all the "internet experts" whose neck will never be in the noose, claim,oops, state lead is perfectly fine. They obviously know a lot more about Glocks than Glock will ever know.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people will ignore manufacturer's warnings and go ahead and follow an anonymous internet stranger's advise.
 
Nobody is saying you have to use lead, just that many, many of us have put thousands of rounds of it down the tube with no problems. So you can listen to those who have shot them, or you can to listen to those who have read about them, up to you....
 
A few months back at Silverdale range I was shooting along side two gentlemen with Glocks (I'm not a Glock guy). They were running cast lead rounds through there Glock 21's? (the .45 model...).

I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary (loud kaboom) but the one guy suddenly stops and puts the gun down. His buddy is kinda hovering around him and he has had some form of malfunction. I went over to see if I could help. He couldn't get the mag out and was showing a bit of redness on his hand (I cant remember if he had minor cuts or not). I gather then that the gun had nearly jumped out of his hand from powerful recoil... I was thinking double charge at the time but after a bit of chatting we figured due to the bulky powder being used that was unlikely. We get the mag out and it shows that the plastic body of it had become wedged into the mag latch as if it had been force-ably removed without the latch being depressed. A small piece of brass fell from the grip frame when the mag came out.

The dude with the mild kaboom took off soon after a bit shaken and his buddy (who had made the reloads) stuck around for a while. He was feeling terrible thinking of the close call that had just occurred. We searched for the offending case and found it after a while. The base had blown out down into the mag well but had apparently cleared the bullet from the barrel and the case from the gun.

We chatted for a bit and I mentioned from my vague knowledge of Glocks that lead and factory barrels are a thin tightrope to walk... From my understanding it could be done but barrels need to be cleaned often to stay on top of lead buildup. Through the conversation he eventually mentioned that his friend isn't the most diligent with cleaning and they had run about 1K rounds of lead through before the incident.

Take it with a grain of salt that I don't own a Glock and have no first hand experience loading for, or shooting lead out of one. I would likely have no fear of shooting lead as long as I gave it frequent cleaning and kept it under 500 rounds per... perhaps the .45 models have more unsupported chamber or more surface area with witch to foul up, whatever the case I'd proceed with caution.
