CCW Recommendations. Thinking HK Tactical Compact in .45

If I did the HK, it would have to have a thread protector to be relatively snag free. I think I want a .45 but not sure which one. This has to be able to fit in the small of my back (and I'm thin) or the inside of the waist of my pants. Something that might work for IDPA would be a bonus I guess. I am fine with a dedicated CCW if it is best. Oh, and I want one NOW! :)
 
My only gripe with the HK's, is that for CCW, they are a relatively THICK.

Decocker likes to catch on things. For the size of the gun as well, its pretty damn heavy compared to say a Glock in the same size.
 
I think it depends upon how big a person you are, and what kind of holster you are gonna put it in. USPs arent the easiest to conceal on smaller frame people. My Galco combat master hides it pretty well. Small of the back for a thin person might be abit of a challenge. Go look at one in person and see for yourself.

In a CCW context, given your apparent preferences, I would opt for a Glock 36, Taurus 24/7 or Ruger 345, all in 45 ACP.
I would also consider one of the 'shorty' Para LDA units in 45ACP as well.
(Personally, my pick for a CCW unit would be a Glock 19, stoked with some
+P JHP units, and I'd feel 'well armed').;)
This discussion falls within the 'delicious dilemma' category.. definately food for thought, but there is no absolute, definative, 'correct' answer!):D
 
personally when I get my permit, I am gonna carry my HK with speer gold dot +P 124s... I figure if it isnt good enough I will cut the holiday in the US short and come back to Canada:)

I ahve seen them and played with them, both at wolverine and at the SHOT show last week. They are a bit thick for sure. I recently sold my USP Match so I know HK. I gues I should pick funtion over cool factor. I must admit if I can buy a more inexpensive gun and like it I will. My GF own a XD40 and I get special pricing on glocks if that's the way to go. Some of the .45s in 1911 have nice skinny grips although I haven't tried them though.

I am shooting Montana Gold JHP in my IPSC gun now and have a few thousand in 9mm also. I will get some in .45 granted, but are the Montana Golds tough enough. They look cool on the line but might not be very battle ready. :)
 
I kinda like those Glock Sub-Compacts with the extended barrels at Questar. You could always keep a shorter barrel State-side for snag-free draws. :p
 
Stick to factory ammo thats made for carry/defence, rem, winchester, federal hdrashock, speer gdhp's ect.

The hk is going to be quite bulky! Sadly many of the great ccw choices are going to be prohib. A g19 though with an extended bbl would be great!
 
Who is that supplier out east who offers discounts to military, ex-military and LE? Are there any other choices outside of glock?
 
So I would have to get someone to mail me the barrel then ditch it on my way home? That would be inconvenient.... :( Is just having a barrel a problem if it isn't mounted? I think I know the answer to this already....

There you go. Cool factor is only good at the range and at home. CCW means it is concealed. What do you think a US cop is going to say when you are arrested and say "well sir, I would have carried something smaller and less noticeable but they're not as cool ya know, dude."? :cool: :rolleyes:

Yes but it still must be legal. I don't have my 12 (6) or whatever. Police ordnance used to have the deals on Glocks with Barsto barrels but I don't see them on the site anymore. I'll check Questar. I wish Springfield XDs were available like that. I like how they fit my hand better than a glock. FYI all, I am 5'11" and 158 pounds.

I checked and the barrel is too short to be legal.
 
change the HK compact V1 to a LEM DAO. No levers to mess with. No trigger creep, and short as you like reset. (if you have shot an LEM, you will know what I am talking about). I sold my USP with LEM, and I regret it. It is a good and reliable gun.

+1 if you're going to carry in a particular state try to find out what the police use and use that. If you have an incident the lawyers will eat you alive if you use handloads.
