Stamped on the bottom of my little cardboard Swedish Mauser ammo boxes the name " Distributor Century Arms Montreal Que". Whats the story on them? I couldn't find anything on the Internet about them.

CAI used to operate out of Montreal, Vermont, and Florida. They were able to exploit the differences between Canadian and US import regs, and we were all pretty happy about that!

Once Canada started prohibiting everything under the sun, and the US started with the Import bans, they said bye-bye to Canada and closed the Montreal and Vermont operations.

As it happens, I found this in a box of "stuff" last week.

Wow!
Then again I have to remind myself that that was 1985 dollars.

BTW according to the CFC it turns out that my Swedish Mauser also came in to Canada from them as well.
Thanx for the info. :)

I have some of their old catalogues around here some place.

I get them out now and again when I need a good CRY!

I know what you mean, this catalogue has ads for the FAMAS and the Daewoo KC20. I really liked the Daewoo, I should have kept it.

I know what you mean I have a bunch of the catalogs from the few years just before they closed up shop, and I cry as well. :( :(

Humm! Airborn remembers those days quite clearly, Irish No4Mk2 still in the wrapper, H&K stuff, FAMAS, Norc AK'S & many many other toys...:)

Century was and is notorious for assembling firearms, especially Lee-Enfields, out of parts bins with no QC of any kind. They assembled thousands of them with bad headspace. They're still assembling FN's with no QC. You never know if any of them will function properly. I wouldn't touch any firearm they've had their mitts on. No matter how low the price.

Bad QC

I'm afraid I have to agree with Sunray, I've had a P14 Centurion in 300 Win Mag which came originaly with a .303 cal barrel when it was a Enfield P14, when I found the accuracy to be poor with factory ammo, I slugged the barrel it miked out to .312 thous of an ins. instead of .308, kind of sloppy if you ask me. Then I got a P17 which had been re-chambered to 308 Win. the chamber was so out of spec. that you shaved brass with factory ammo, when you tried to resize the brass to reload it, got rid of that in a hurry also.

I don't own anything center-fire I can't reload for.

Bullet Caster

I bought a Taurus model 80 in 38 special, 3" barrel from them in 1994 for 50 bucks! I didn't know what I was going to do with it but it turned out that it was in good condition and shot reasonably well. I still have it and it was the only reason that I got a 12.6 on my license :D

And who would have thought back then that Montreal/Quebec would become the most anti gun place in Canada.
