Sorry to say but the ELCAN is not crap "not the best though" and yes its bulky and heavy, but it can take a beating and holds a zero. )

.....Ugh......I call lies....
.I've never had one hold a zero for more than a few days.
Granted the C79A2 is a big improvement over its predecessor, its still large and useless. But it is green, so therefore looks bad-ass.
BAD STUFF
-It does not allow for use of a BUIS
-Not NV compatible (doesnt need to be, as use of PEQ2/4/15 mitigates this)
-isnt worth its weight, literally
-rubber buis last about 6hrs in a combat environment,
-the external adjustment is a lost-zero waiting to happen.
-It comes loose all the time, how many times have you had to pass down "check that your sights tight" down the line on any type of patrol? That's not good.
-Always ices up/fogs up and without a reliable buis, youre SOL.
-Does not support BAC,
-Tunnel vision on it is incredible
GOOD STUFF
-The tritium arrow allows me to easily pick up muzzle flashes at night w/o NV
-The new mount with the metal adjustment screws does not come loose, as often.
-The "stadia" sp? lines are great for ranging dismounted tgt's
-The glass is reasonable, i dont find a lot of parallax when ranging/firing.
-3.4X mag is great for checking culverts and seeing what "buddy" is carrying or digging.
I have never had an issue with my TA01NSN. Although, it too is not NV compatible. However, I never had to re-zero it after throwing it around a truck for 7 months, it shot the same group at the same POA the day before I left to come home.
Long story short I'd much rather spend the money on a TA31, as I believe this would be my ideal optic for the current AOO.
I will not comment on Eotech/S&B/AIMPOINT/Spectre DR as I have NIL experience with them. But I've carried the ELCAN on 2 deployments, and multiple ex's for a total of about 3 years WEAPON IN HAND. As well as 7 months WEAPON IN HANDin theatre with the TA01NSN.
