Oh not all were fixed and not all fixes worked.

2wks ago on the range the scope and mount were not well attached to each other the base was nice and tight.

shot some really ####ty groups almost 6", untill I found the problem.

then by beign carefully and not letting my helmet touch the scope I managed to shoot 2 PWT serials scoring 23/25 and 25/25, then going on to PWT2 and scoring 50 something I really didn't care just as long as I scored marksman as usual.

KevinB, if you've been around Jefferson Armoury.....The Cadets seem to drive things there....

I have seen people having problems with their sights on the PWT 3 last week. They never checked the screw on the sight and they subsequently fell off the rifle on the run. You can hardly blame the C79A2 for that...

Elcans are Junk!! Thats why 90% of the soldiers don't use them when they have a choice in the matter. May be fine, doing that pwt, but in the real world there are much better optics out there. Ones that don't restrict your vision, and ones with proper crosshairs. You can't shoot instinctively with them, even though there will always be some MCPL who will tell you to use the battle sights on the top. At ranges closer than 100 meters, my opinion is they are more of a hinderance than anything else. And for anything past 100 there are far better optics out there. Remember, just because it is issued, doesn't mean it's the Cat's ass.

Since you seem to have experience on regarding this, what do you use (when you have a choice in the matter)?

On my tour I used Iron sights, with an Eotech Holo. Next time I would probably put an ACOG with one of the small Holo adapters on it.

I'm not too fond of Elcans. They kept getting loose and some guys lost thiers in the bush. And Pete is right, the top battle sights are garbage, half of them have the rubber sights grinded off by rough handling at the QM. ACOG much better IMO

It is hard to dissagree with that. I was/am not trying to say that the Elcan is perfect, far from it.

But if your only experience with the Elcan is confined to shooting the PWT 3, then there shouldn't be mass failure of it. If there is, I would hope it is being looked into by the leadership of the unit and the weapon techs.

Knowing the limitation of a piece of kit is excellent. Pushing for better kit, especially when you know there is something better out there, is a necessity.

Not making full use of what you have, or having kit that is NS or BS (barely servc.) is inexcusable.
 
Depending upon the history of the scope(s) and the unit, prior to the C79A2 more than 50% of some units C79's were N/S. This included numerous unit FCS "rebuilds". The C79A2 are brand new and will serve as a force modernization for the optic fleet - up until they are beat to ####.

An external adjustable optic that uses the front and rear mounting points to the mount as it adjustment areas is bound to transfer all impacts onto the optic into the mount -- thus it has a very finite lifespan. Not to mention the gearing is subject to the elements, and fine sand will chew it to ####.
Why most modern combat optics use internal adjustment.

Of course when I pointed this out to higher Soldier Systems wanted me charged... Nothing like slaying sacred cows :rolleyes:

Question for you experienced guys:
What is the average distant that you engage in? I'm just curious as to what would work better: a red-dot, Eotech holo, or an ACOG (only 4x?)?

Engaging distance

it could be anywhere between 10m (CQB) and out. Generally infantry have been trained to engage at 300m and closer although the rifle can hit out a lot farther.

Yes and no.If you can get through it without any unforseen complications it is easy to score well.However on two separate occasions I scored poorly because of multiple stoppages.all it takes is one N/S mag during an exposure.
