Well folks, the shoot was a blast! As I type this, most of the group should still be out there. The Wife and I elected to head home last night already, but not before we had a great time. I want to thank all those who came out, Captain2K_ca for helping me organize and getting us the land, and to the gophers who readily sat in our cross hairs. :D

C2K and DaveMachine met us in town and after a quick bite we were off. We drove out together, and man don't let anybody ever tell you driving through Saskatchewan is boring. There are plenty of gophers on the highway to keep things fun! We set up some signs and then went out to the campsite. Whie I was still setting up my tent, C2K already blasted his first gopher with his shotgun. After that, the wackiness ensued. We did however discover you need appox. 1 gallon of gasoline to light wet firewood, which didn't exactly turn out as planned, but you can ask C2K about that one. :D Some rain blew in and shortly after, we went down to the makeshift range to sight in and shoot a few rats. Some of the others started to pull pulled in after that, and Andrewe and his lovely wife were first. They had the coolest little pop-up trailer that reminds him of Snoopy's dog house. Tripalm, SV7772, Davemachine, Captain2K_ca , Andrewe and myself made up the Gunnutz, and Andrewe's, C2K's and my wife showed us all how it was done. C2K's two cousins also joined us, and the result was a camp of 11 people. We shot until 9:00 Friday night, and then the BS'ing session around the fire started. What a great night.

Saturday started beautiful and clear. We got the fire going at sun up and ate breakfast. But before we could get too excited, the rain blew in. It socked us in for several hours, but that didn't stop the more hearty members. Through out the Morning, several broke into small groups and went out. Shots could be heard from camp, prompting others to head out between showers. But then it happened, Saturday Afternoon the clouds lifted, the sun came out and the gophers were everywhere. It's been a long time since I experianced that good of a shoot. I know I wen't through alot of ammo Yesterday Afternoon, I only hope the others burn off alot more today!

It was a blast and there's talk about doing it again next year. Good luck to everyone still out there.

I couldn't make it out there this year, but if you let me know ASAP when/where you figure the next event will be I'm pretty sure I can round up a carload or two or VERY eager Quebecers (mostly French, including myself) ... We just have to plan our vacation time right so we can make the 2-3 day drive back AND forth and still get some trigger time .....

Just had to bring up the gas can didnt you? :slap:

Apparently if you douse a little sprinkle of gas onto a fire that looks like it is out, but isnt, it flares up quite rapidly!!! Of course the flare up HAS to reach the mouth of the gas can and sets the whole deal on fire...well what do you do to a flaming gas can? Im not gonna hang onto it, you arent gonna put it out, and you obviously dont kick it over and spread the fire!! I did what any sane person would do...looked at for about 4 milliseconds and tossed it into the fire!! Did you know that a gas can takes quite a while to melt?? :dancingbanana: I reimbursed my cousin for the can and the gas, but it was a really old worn out can and he didnt care...other than he missed the excitement!!! :runaway:

The last day of the shoot, was absolutely amazing!! The day dawned bright and clear, and the ground was like a living carpet of gophers!!! Through the course of the weekend I will have to guess that the total body count would be in the THOUSANDS!!! There was no way to keep track!!

Made a whole bunch of new friends, it was the best weekend shooting that I have had in years!!

For those of you asking why you werent invite, this trip was in the planning stage in January, and there was a sticky about it in the hunting section from the start!!

My Total KM's Round trip: 846.5
Total Cost in Gas: Around $70
Making new friends who cant wipe the grins off of their faces: PRICELESS!!

I think we all had sore hands from reloading magazines! Sad part is we really didnt put a big dent in the gopher population out there!

I also have to really thank my 2 cousins, and my aunt who went a step beyond what I was expecting to make sure the campsite was prepared for us!!!

I also managed to put together a few little door prizes for those who ventured out in the cold...winners and prizes were:

CASD Button: My cousin Ernie!
CASD Button: Andrewe!
CASD Embroidered Patch: Davemachine!
Gerber Multitool: Andrewe's wife Jackie!
Gerber Multitool: Tripalm!
Brick of .22 ammo: pharoah2!!!

But I guess it is time for a few pix!!!

I'm super jealous!
I hope this becomes an annual event, because I will definitely try my best to come next year!

how many?

well how many does it take until you see ghophers in front of you but you can't reload your clip because you think your thumb will fall off. thats how many we shot. I had to leave early but I think sunday would have been ridiculous for ghophers out there. We definately need to do an trip again soon, AWESOME country out there. and thanks for everyone who put it together and everyone who made it. Iam still pumped..

Sorry I had to leave mid morning on Sunday, but had to be back for a Father's Day Dinner, but next year I'm planning on a few extra days. This year we had few challenges but all in all it was a good weekend, great people, fantstic hospitility, a little rain, LOT'S of gophers, AND I'M STILL GRINNING:).
A BIG THANKYOU TO CAPTAIN2K_CA AND PHARAOH2 FOR SETTING THIS UP WITH OUR HOSTS. you put a lot of work into this weekend and I know everyone there really appreciated everything you did for us.
I did relearn a few things, gophers are very small at 100 plus yards, everyone there was a better shot then I was but no one had more fun, fruity drinks taste just as good in Sask. CGNr's are great people, rain can't dampen spirits, my 22-250 would shoot way better in the hands of someone else but my my can it ever turn rodents into acrobats.
All in all a great weekend, I appreciated the opportunity to meet everyone and am already looking forward to next year, I may even have to buy another few guns to keep up with the Winnipeg Militia,
Thanks again everyone, it was a lot of fun:dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanana:

Thanks Everyone!

What can I say? We had an absolutely great time and can't wait to do it again.

After over 10 hours on the road from Winnipeg we arrived to a cheery welcome and a flaming gasoline can that was almost out of control. We set up the weird little camper in about 10 minutes and I had bagged my first rat at 15 minutes. A sure sign that this was going to be a great weekend.

The first night everyone got to know each other as we all trickled in. There was a little bit of show and tell around the fire as we checked out the firepower. Later on we often swapped rifles. I think my favorite was DaveMachine's CZ 858.

We were up early the next morning and after a roasted breakfast that tasted slightly of gasoline we were off. We often broke into small groups to scour the field edges and hillsides.

It was pretty funny sometimes... We'd spot a group of gophers and we'd get into shooting positions. Then you'd hear "oohhh ouch, ouch, damn, wtf!" and your neighbour would hop up and reveal one of these:

Saturday was some crazy weather. The only constant was the wind. It would pour rain for 5 minutes and then be sunny for the next ten. Of course this stopped no-one from heading out for some shooting. The gophers were plentiful when the sun shined. Those using a shotgun found that you could bag several at once even when using a full choke. Running shots were a lot of fun.

By late Saturday I was having trouble holding up my rifle as my arms were worn out. My fingers were raw from constantly reloading magazines. Supper was devoured by all as I think we were all pretty beat and we'd had so much fun we hadn't stopped for lunch. We were all sorry to see Pharoah2 and Mrs. Pharoah2 leave that evening.

Sunday morning brought blue skies and hoards of gophers. we moved to new positions and started shooting them like it was whack-a-mole. Shoot one, the next pops up. Many times there's be a half dozen popped up on a line. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. Not any more.

Later in the day we found positions where we could shoot 100-250 yards across a gully. DaveMachine was able to pop 2 at almost 200 yards with his .22LR CZ. My best shot was made here when my .243 sent a gopher at 200 yards 12 feet into the air.

As this was our last day time was limited and we reluctantly had to leave.

I'd like to thank Captain2k and Pharoah2 for organizing such a great time. Of course I want to thank Ernie, the landowner who graciously allowed to use his beautiful piece of land.

Some things I'd like to mention. Southwestern Saskatchewan is absolutely gorgeous. DaveMachine was by far the best shot I noticed this weekend. He was doing amazing things with the open sights on his CZ 858. Then he showed me how a .22LR could act like a centrefire. Captain2k's Ruger was crazy accurate and got me thinking about hopping up Jaquie's stock rifle. She says she wants a thumbhole stock for her Remington 700 first after trying SVT772's fancy stocks. Loading magazines sucks. A .243 is too much gun for a gopher. The price of gas sucks. The ladies can definitely show a guy how to shoot.

Thanks so much, everyone, for such a great weekend.

Can't wait until next time.

Captain2k's picture here shows one of my favorite shooting spots. We started out shooting down into the bottom. When we cleared that area we started doing some serious shooting. Lining up on the gophers all the way across the vally was very tough. As Tripalm said; "gophers are very small targets at 100 plus yards." I'd estimate the distance we were shooting at 200-250 yards. That didn't stop DaveMachine from bagging two with his CZ .22LR.

We're now off to Wholesale Sports to make some purchases for the next time we're invited to a gopher hunt.
