I just got my Chaparral NWMP 1876 in the mail yesterday and I was at first impressed with such an exciting looking firearm. The finish is nice, the wood is nice and everything was tight......too tight in fact.

Levering the gun I found it was so tight it seemed like something is bunging up the action. Upon closer inspection I found that the receiver sideplates either were sticking out and not fully in, although at this point I can't verify whether or not its because they are too thick or were just not installed correctly, I will have to see tonight when I get home. :confused:

In addition to that, the dust cover should be actuated by the levering of the gun however after working the first time, the bolt seemed to somehow 'miss' the dust cover and everything got bunged up.

I am lucky enough to hardly ever have problems with my firearms, and those that do are usually the ones that are 100 years old, however from a new gun I have to say the out of box workmanship is a little......worrying.

Anyone else have any experience with a Chaparral?
 
I've heard both good and bad comments on Chaparral, although, if you did get a lemon, I would think Marstar would make it right.
 
I am familiar with the internals on a '76. Given what you describe, I would definitely not work the action. Something is seriously wrong. They are pretty simple inside and you could take the side plates off and take a look, but the question is whether you would void the warranty. Personally, you should not void the warranty by taking the side plates off .... they were intended to be removed. If it were me, I'd remove the plates and figure out where the binding is occurring. If it was a piece of foreign material, easy fix, but if it is anything more serious, send it back. Thanks guys, I just didn't want to have to send it back, its a new gun......darn it all. It was hard enough waiting the last three weeks.

I will have to call Marstar and see what they suggest. I know they are good about this stuff, I just want to hopefully avoid the return and two months wait for a repair or replacement.
 
went to the range last night and put 40 rounds through my Chaparral '76 Mountie. I'm still fire-forming my reformed .348 brass and it is still a little long until the brass takes on the right shape. She functioned fine except for the round that is a hair too long. She works well if a round is a little short but not if it is a little too long.

Does anyone else have any feedback on these....I've got a chance to pick one up NIB for a fair price, but it would be nice to know a bit more about them be it good, bad, or otherwise...:confused:
