Picture it!.......May 25, 2010. Somewhere in the wilderness of BC, The day started out like any other work day, get to the job site, put on the bush gear, and off to work we go!! My work partner, was doing some SP work and I was going to paint some falling boundary and ribbon a few creeks. I decided to paint the boundary first, after about 2hrs of painting I'm back on the road, heading down to the next start point, I get ~20m off the road and hear something in front of me.....can't see it but can hear it......Deer?.....Moose?....nope, Bear. Ok no big deal, been here in this situation before, make a little noise and should head off, worked before!.......WRONG!!!! I make a whistle, all goes quite for about 30sec.......Then i hear it.....clapping of the teeth and a loud lip flapping blow!!!!......instantly I realize.....Crap.....Sow and cubs!!!! Right away I see 2 little fur balls run up a tree about 30yrds to my right, then right in front of me Mamma makes a bluff charge, I yell at her.....Get atta here....Go!!! She bluff charges me again....... Get atta here....Go!!! This time she charges straight at me........lucky for me I had a 14inch Fir tree that I was standing behind......she came right at me....stopping on other side of the tree slapping her paw on the tree just missing my knee by mear inches........by now she is literally a tree width from me......right away I thing......paint can.....I hold it out and give a blast of orange paint to the eyes.......instantly she jumps back about 2ft.....again I'm yelling....Get atta here....Go!!! She gives me another lip flapping blow, The paint spray most have give her a good scare, cause I did this 3 more times and each time she would move back a little further!! Finally she was back under the tree with her babies! After what seem like a life time the little ones came down and moved off, when they were in mamma's safe zone she also moved on!! I kept watching her until I felt safe enough to move out myself.......at that point I got outa there faster then the wind!!! I have had Bear incounters before....but this was the worst!!! Just happy it turned out the way it did!!! All this took place in about a 5-10 min span!! Thanks for sitting in and reading.....sorry if it's a little on the long read!!

And who says 'bear spray' doesn't work!? :p

I think it's great that you had that can of spray paint and had the presence of mind to use it for self defense. Both you and the bear got away with no harm done.

But I think you should invest in some actual bear spray and carry a defender or .44mag handgun if your job permits carrying a firearm, and assuming you can get an ATC.

In this craptastic world we are livin in, he's gonna need a golden di*k and a letter from God to get a permit to carry. Its only his life he has to protect, not a banks money for Christ's sake!!!!!
I had a little run in last Tuesday. I ran into a cub on a rock bluff about 50m from the road. I didn't move for a couple of seconds to evaluate the situation, but he started to whine, so I headed back to the road. I picked up a handful of rocks as soon as I saw the cub. I ended up seeing momma (who was on the smaller side of mature) come clumsily trotting towards me. She stopped about 30 to 40 feet from me and made a snort. I threw the handful of rocks at her and one hit her in the nose. She started shaking her head and sneezing and I just jogged the last 10 or so meters to my jeep. I probably could have made it without stopping to chuck the rocks. But I had to look behind me cause I got nervous of the distance she was to me. Anyhow, I actually would have liked my chances of an actual physical confrontation of this particular blackie. Definately weighed less than I did. (I'm 220, I guess the blackie was 180 or so?) Not quite as scary as the OP's event. Glad you weren't hurt. Apply for the permit now. (just make sure you have a can of GOLD spray paint, and some nice letterhead to forge Gods name on. )

Not true! There are still loop holes in the ATC permit app' that people can exploit. I just printed off 2 copies of the ATC application and I'm gonna consider my 'options'. I know for certain there's a way to get it, legally.

It might have a lot to do with the person you deal with in getting one. Reasonable people do exist I am sure in the offices of those who grant these permits??? Yes/no???

A few years ago, the ATC App' had about 4 different things you could use.

Armed car guard, trapper, geologist and 'other'. So I submitted an ATC app' for SELF DEFENSE. Lady at the CFC office in Edmonton phoned me and told me I couldn't carry for self defense, she said to get a trappers license. So I did. And I had a valid ATC, using the legal loop hole. But it was Bulls**t, just like the idiotic law. The ATC said I could only carry while engaged in activities of trapping.

Now they've tightened it up, removed the 'other' category. And for guys that use trapping to justify an ATC, they now demand proof of revenue from trapping.

For sure the jobs that still remain, where people can get a valid, legal ATC are geologist, timber cruiser, remote oilfield workers, hunting guide etc. And it needs to be remote country. BUT you need the backing of an employer that will vouch for you.

Second part is to demonstrate proficiency with a big bore handgun. I did that with an RCMP firearms instructor. He was a good guy. I shot my .44Mag Ruger Redhawk and my .480Ruger SRH.

So I've still got the letter from the RCMP officer testifying that I can handle the big guns, my problem is I need to get somebody to back me, as to my occupation as a *********...

Anybody involved in a legitimate outdoor job, in a remote area, with backup from his employer can still get an ATC. That's a fact! If you qualify, then you should try to get it!

308 win, If you are working in British Columbia in Bear Country your employer has some obligations to you with regards to equipment and training. If you are self employed and that incident turned into you getting mauled and you reported the events as above WCB would fight tooth and nail not to pay comp.

Glad you did'nt get hurt.
