Cheap .223, recomendations?

Hello all,

looking to get a cheap .223 and I've been thinking about the
H&R single shot in new or used. Also giving thought to a Savage or Stevens
bolt action.

Not looking for a semi, although the mini-14 looks pretty cool, but not necessary and too much for what I plan on spending(less than $400).

This gun will be used for hunting not target shooting it will be getting beat around in a boat and/or walking through the woods.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated,
Thanks in advance
Cheers

Stevens.

And in due course, if you want, you can toss in a Timney trigger, maybe pick up a different stock, and you will have something you really like for not much expenditure of coin.

I looked at the Bushranger the other day at a show.
I wouldn't take it for free!

Stevens 1st, Handi 2nd if it were my choice.

Thanks for the quick replies,
anyone out there own a H&R? I would like to hear from
you,
I've shot the Stevens 200 .223 and thought it was a good
gun, but haven't even seen a H&R in person, would like
to know what people who own them think,

Stevens again, by far the best bang for the buck and accessories available to make it into a first class varmint gun if you chose to later on. Add a Timney trigger, a pre-chambered barrel from Mysticplayer and a stock from Boyds and you will have a super accurate field and range gun that didn't break the bank.

I'm looking for one too, but i want sights on it, not intending to scope it. Look's like H&R, Rossi or Baikal. Problem is I'm having a heck of a time finding anyone with these rifles in stock. In the middle of no-where, so have to do my shopping by internet. Any suggestions for dealers? I've gone through all the dealers on this site, and only found one that has one of the brands mentioned.

Oh ya, forgot, Remington carried the baikal guns for a couple of years under the Spartan line, but haven't been able to find any of those either.

Memaquay,
I've found a couple on-line
Cabela's has the 200 here https://www.cabelas.ca/index.cfm?pageID=71&section=1187&section2=1724&ID=5426
but I can get it cheaper at a local shop.
They also have a H&R here https://www.cabelas.ca/index.cfm?pageID=71&section=1187&section2=1724&section3=1731&ID=2991
There are others on-line but I'd have to dig through the 25 or so bookmarks I've got and that took me about three hours yesterday.
From responses so far it looks like the Stevens is the way to go,
thanks again all,
cheers

Thanks for the info Carson Blocks.
Also, hmr-hound let me know how the
H&R shoots, strange I didn't see that rifle
on ellwoodepps website, as like most of the
websites I have bookmarked, not a lot of them
updating on a regular basis:rolleyes:, oh well I'll just have
to buy from the ones who do.

I've had 2 H&R 223 ultras

The first I broke in with JB bore paste and Kroil - It shot one hole 3 rd. 100yd. groups but opened up to 1 1/2 " after five rounds - re JB and one hole again.

The second one I didnt break in and it was 1 1/2 always.

Good guns - full barrel length in a short carry gun.

h and r are accurate guns or a least the one i had was .i found the hammer too close to the scope for my liking .it also had ejection problems and i was not satisfied with the gun. i recently purchased a baikal and it does not have the interference problem as it has no exposed hammer . the baikal seems to weigh less if my memory serves me correctly .i have not shot the baikal so i have no comment on accuracy .the baikal guns are worth a look in my opinion and are a nicer looking gun with the twisted hammer forged barrel.

I have a N.E.F. Handi-Rifle Superlight in .223 and it works well. I bought it new and it cost more than a Stevens 200 does, but the Stevens 200 didn't exist back then. The Handi-Rifles seem to be just H&R now and the new price has come down. The Stevens is a very good rifle and great value for money, but I still like my Handi-Rifle better - just personal preference.

I have a handi rifle in .223 Rem, with a heavy barrel and wood stock.
I agree that the hammer sits quite close to the underside of the scope, but with the extension, it's not a big deal.
Mine has an extractor, not an ejector, but at least I don't have to go chasing after the brass!
It shoots really well. With the break action, the overall length is quite short, although the barrel itself is 22 inches IIRC.
The heavy barrel makes it a bit heavier to pack around. However, we like to use it at the range and fire repeated shots, without long pauses between successive shots. With that usage, the heavy barrel is nice. On the other hand, a light barrel is great for packing around, but if you fire a rapid sequence, it warms up quite fast. So....depends on what you want.....think about how you want to use it (packing vs bench, occassional shot vs frequent shooting), and that will help you decide what you like best

Good luck!

I ordered a Baikal on Friday, hope it comes in this week. I've got the same gun in 7.62 x 54, and it's pretty accurate for the price. I'll write up a review once it comes in.

15 years ago I bought my son a T/C Contender carbine in 30-30 we now have 7 or 8 barrels and one other frame.

Bought our NIB 223 barrel off of the EE for $200.00 added a MGM scope base, had a spare scope that I mounted and we were set grand total of $250.00 and we were shooting a super accurate 223...

Couple weeks ago I bought a NIB 204 Ruger for $160.00 off of the EE mounted a cheap Weaver base to get by until the MGM base gets here and I had a spare 4-12C LR Leupold scope grand total of $230.00 and we are shooting a 204...

Get a Contender/G2 carbine... :D

NEF is about as cheap as you are going to get - a rifle the goes bang. A Stevens 200 is far superior. You can do tons of stuff to them. DO a quick forum search and you will see all sorts of Stevens 200 customization.
