Cheap home defense style shotgun?

As this probably would never be used inside my home, having the option just incase would give me a better frame of mind.

Fry,

Although it looks badass and hollywood's told you it's practical, try shooting a few defense loads (i.e not just birdy bangers) from a short pistol gripped 12 guage.

You can't defend your family with damn near broken wrists.

If you want a pistol grip, go ahead, but make sure it's got a shoulder stock too... I suggest the knoxx stock line, VERY cool.

If money is really tight, but you still want the best than go with a used Wingmaster. Older 2 3/4" only models come up for sale all the time at very reasonable prices. Last one I picked up cost me $250, she won't win any beauty contests, but I was lookin' for a pig that I could ride hard.

Just picked up a "Norc" 870 copy myself. Changed the stock set for a Hogue set. Made for the 870. Went on with no problems, had the gun smith do the change at the store. And talking about gunsmiths....if the fellow in the past post who wanted after market sights in stalled, go to Epps, ask for Doug. He,s one of there smiths...ex gunplumper. Does great work. So there you have it. You can make a neat little gun out of the cheap shotties as well.

I don't find 3inch 000buck loads hard on the wrists with pistol grip only, but a shoulder stock would be on the table as well.

keep in mind it isn't a good idea to use flairs in your home as the are an ex\ilant way to start a house fire if we can have them made legal for civilian use the new XREP or Extended range electronic projectile would be perfect for home defence from what i have heard about getting shocked with an NMI device i doubt the baddie will be eager to try and fight after a 20 second shock

Hit someone in the chest with a plastic shotgun wad from 10 feet away, and they would prob' drop like a bag of potatoes. :D

Funny you mentioned that Calum, I once had a rather psychotic aquaintance in Petawawa. HIS form of initation for FNGs was this:
After morning PT, in the barracks shower room, he would hide all cammed up with his recent favorite jungle fatigues. Patiently awaiting for the later arriving new guys, while hiding in the last shower stall. In his demented paws he carried a very illegal, double barrelled sawed off, 12 gauge shotgun. His face was always fully cammed, and he had the army green bandage for a head-band.

When the FNGs came out of the shower, he would give out a blood-curdling scream and blast them in the chest with old horse-hair wads and they usually were knocked back into the wall with two wad shaped bruises in thier chest.

Bewildered and very happy to be alive.
It takes a while, but the painful bruises do go away after a time.

PS: "He" was later kicked out for drug addition problems....
Off to the oil patch he went, from whence he came.

wow ithink that would scare the #### out of must people lol yea if its a gun for serious home defense a double barrel 12 gauge is the way to go with a pistol grip

springs in tube mags wear out and can seize up in extreme enviroments when you #### a hammer back on a twelve gauge brake very seldom does it misfire i love pumps but when it comes down to my life i still won't trust one

Are not the hammers spring operated?
If you are worried about spring failures, replace your springs periodically. I have seen lots of 100 year old pump action guns but have yet to see one where the mag spring was the problem.

About the only thing I have seen go mechanically wrong with a pump action shotgun (that didn't belong to me) is an extractor broke, and on another a firing pin broke, and the funny part is they still worked to a degree if one rattled then the right way. :D

hmmmm less letal round might be easyer to get then i though i was considering loading up a few shells with air soft bbs and slighlty under laoding the powder from spec

i used to do something similar with these confettie shooters and disicant packs but found it was useless and unreliable and way under powered but iwas like 10

any one know if the legalitys of using a less leathial rnd in self deffence are any differant then a leathail one a least for the first shoot

Realistically, it's still part of the 'force' continuum, but you're now trading 'legal niceties' for you saftey. I'd say 'don't'. If you're not trained, it's dangerous.

If someone sees you have a shotgun, and they STILL attack you, at that point i'd say it's better to shoot to kill. If you want less lethal, go with bear spray.

If you shoot someone with a bean bag round, you must have the experience to know where to hit them, how to judge the reaction to your hit, you must be sure not to short stroke or have a FTF on the next round if it doesn't stop them, and you'll still have all kinds of legal issues to face. If you shoot someone with 00 buck, all you need to know is how to work the mop.

You're not a cop. Don't screw around. Try to avoid having to fire by challenging them, displaying the gun, calling the police and telling the bad guy they're on the way, etc. If you DO have to fire ... make it count. Your life is on the line. And you don't want to have to do in two shots what you should have done in one.
