Check-Mate mags

I heard good things of this mag:

CM54-7-B-H

- 7 rounder
- Welded baseplate
- Flat follower (w/ dimple)
- Hybrid (tapered) lips
- Std. spring (hi-perf --11#-- sprg as an option?)

Which ones turned up bad for you?

I had three 7 rounders that came as "factory" mags with my Colt 1911 (they have a Colt logo on them but are actually made by Check Mate). They sound exactly like the one you described. The first mag was defective from the start - it had an incorrectly machined follower which made it nearly impossible to release the slide stop with an empty mag in.The second mag broke after the first range session (the spring gave up), and the third one was also causing some sort of a problem, though I don't specifically recall what it was. In addition to the malfunctions, the mags felt pretty clunky and spring compression wasn't smooth.

Check Mate has a history of making poor quality mags. They were the subcontractor that manufactured a whole bunch of defective Beretta 92 mags for the U.S. military, giving that gun an undeserved reputation of a jam-o-matic.

If you want high-quality, reasonably priced mags, check out STI-branded ones (actually manufactured by ACT). They are head and shoulders above Check Mate in my opinion.
