Is there a home solution for this?
Found some chems from Caswell, black oxide solution with a sealer for after the treatment, just wondering if it actually works?

I used some chemicals years ago to blacken some stainless pocket door handles and it worked well.... pretty sure it was caswell, I still have some left in the shop but not sure if it's still good to use.

Cerakote works well
I like cerakote, I don't have the gear to do it properly at home, and the few muzzle brakes I have to do I kind of wanted a home made solution.
I read up on how the US did M1 Garand stainless gas cylinders and it's pretty wild, it was 70-80 years ago, but yeah, it was some toxic chemical process.
I did get the Caswell stuff, haven't tried it yet, will report back.
300 series stainless it says a good soak in muriatic acid is the best prep, it's easy to get at least.

Interested to see how this goes? The Caswell stuff was pricey to ship?
Thanks!
R.

Which chemical exactly? And where did you get it?

Pretty sure the muriatic acid will etch the metal and give it a frosted finish. I need something that will leave a shiny finish.

Caswell Canada, can't link as not a sponsor.
I haven't even tried it yet, black oxide for stainless steel with sealer is the package, around $50 plus the shipping and tax.
Just pointing out the muriatic acid as it's mentioned on the site in the tips.
I don't know if a quick soak would etch stainless, probably more for degreasing and prep.
