Chiappa Alaskan Scout - .44Mag Takedown Levergun review.

I couldn't justify the price of one of those but I'm glad some of you guys got them and like them. Cool review Kev. Thanks.

What is the use? 1200fps is pathetic in terms of hunting.

The use is short range, handy package, defensive use and of course just plain fun. Since it's a breakdown model I'd rather have a 16 inch barrel for the extra capacity and a bit more velocity.

It's not primarily a hunting rifle but in a pinch a good load and a good hunter could get the job done.

Now... either I have the softest skin in the universe, or this thing kicks pretty hard due to the hockey puck style recoil pad... I am hoping it is latter, as I have not had this good of a bruise from 70 rounds in one sitting as I have from any other gun in years... Perhaps a new recoil pad is in order for the near future... haha.

Get back to me when you butt pad looks like this:

I am pretty sore after some 300grn rounds with that, and I still need to figure out a recoil pad that fits it.

But I agree, these little rifles are handy and accurate. Love em to death!

I get 1400 fps with a 265gr cast out of my revolver and 1700 fps with the same load in my 1894. I'm sure you can do better than 1200 unless the gun can't take hot loads.

Working on 261 gr. Keith/2400 Chiappa load workup, even as we speak kman.
Care to share some of your data?.
PM if you want, so's not to be drifting Kev's thread out'a hunting and into handloading.
I do suspect he'll be all ears tho ...:)

Thanks kman, will put that good info in the bank. Been meaning to try me some 296/H110.
Any leading?. What lube?. GC'd?.

My boolits are .430", GC'd, 20% hard shot 80% WW alloy, water quenched.
Maybe a little bit harder than they need to be?.

Yes, they are gc and I use nra 50/50 lube. No leading. I see no need for harder lead for my purposes. I tested that bullet through a cow femur and it penetrated 22" of wet newspaper after going through the femur and muscle.

I'm curious, is this Chiappa stainless or plated? My understanding is that they are not stainless steel, but a good carbon steel that has been plated with something.

Well, here it is...

Got my Chiappa Alaskan Takedown .44 Magnum a few weeks ago, and through lots of fondling, and a bit of range time... I have come to some conclusions...

I LOVE THIS GUN!

It is a fun, short, packable little rifle, build quality seems very good from my inspection to this point, reliability has been as you would expect with a lever action, and the thing is just plain old ###y! .44 Magnum is a stout cartridge, suitable to put down most game at reasonable distances, I think most here would agree on.

(Factory pic, having problems with the camera at the moment)

Now, to the shooting video...

Sweet rifle I am very Jealous lol

I think 19.2 grains of H110 and the wonderful 280 grain .430 Woodleigh FN would be my all around diet for that Chiappa

thanks

Ken

I am very Jealous lol
As am I.
Been sizing/seating checks, washing, depriming, sizing brass, flaring case mouths, etc., all nite.
That 'lil vixen .44, she has gotten under my skin, so she has.

Kev's really opened a can of worms with that one, so he has. May take years to persuade him to part with it.
If I have to feed it to shoot it in the meantime ... then so be it. A welcome excuse to spend qual. time at the loading bench.
The guy, he's got me over a barrel at the moment. ... :p

Kevin M and all those who have one of these beauties, with this gun and the soon to come out .45 70, do you think this gun can take the punishment of a bush/ trail type gun with relatively frequent use, both in the woods and target/plinking? What problems if any, do you foresee possibly happening? I would assume the .45 70 will be strengthened in appropriate areas and most likely be as robust as the .44 mag.!
I am not asking you to bash the gun because I believe , as most folks here do, that it is very well made,, just wanted your opinion on any weak spots that may show up! An example would be as another CGN'er already mentioned the concern that the Mag tube screw down may loosen, etc; !
Cheers Bob
